Album Notes
PETER ROWAN Crucial Country

Recorded live at the Telluride Festival in 1994, Crucial Country captures live an incredible band of stars in one of their greatest moments. From bluegrass standard “The Walls of Time”, co-written with Bill Monroe, to “Panama Red”, one of Rowan’s signature classics, and an inspirational version of Bob Marley’s “No Woman, No Cry”, this record makes country crucial.

Peter Rowan – lead vocal and guitar
Jerry Douglas – dobro, harmonies
Larry Atamanuik – drum kit
Sam Bush – mandolin, fiddle, harmonies
Viktor Krauss – acoustic upright bass
Kester Smith – congas, percussion

Peter Rowan was one of the major cult bluegrass artists of the '80s, winning a devoted, international fan base through his independent records and constant touring. A skilled singer/songwriter, Rowan also yodels, and plays numerous stringed instruments and the saxophone. From Bill Monroe's Bluegrass Boys, to Earth Opera with David Grisman, to Seatrain, then Old & In The Way (with David Grisman & Jerry Garcia) and recordings with his brothers in The Rowan Brothers, Peter continues to release extraordinary recordings in a wide range of styles.

Sam Bush went on from Newgrass Revival to play with Emmylou Harris as did Sea Train associate, drummer Larry Atamanuik. Jerry produced several of Peter’s solo projects for Sugar Hill. Jerry and Larry both now play with Alison Krauss and Union Station. Viktor Krauss has been with Lyle Lovett for a number of years, Sam continues his solo career and Kester Smith still plays drums with Taj Mahal.

Big Bill from Bolinas

I heard Navahoe Road on our local radio and bought immediately. It's great!
Crucial Country has been playing in my car continuously since I bought it two weeks ago. I was fortunate to meet the lead artist, Peter Rowan two nights ago performing and learned that this "live from Telluride" was done unrehearsed. A truely great, ass kick'n, finger pick'n winner. Should go to top of the charts!

Great musicians, good venue, & vibes
give this cd a second listen & you'll pick up the nuances of these great musicians

Any performance from Telluride is a must-have no matter the artist. This one is no exception. With an all-star line-up, Peter Rowan played a set for the ages at the 1994 Telluride Bluegrass Festival and now we all get to hear it like it was yesterday. I highly recommend this for any fans of Peter, Sam Bush, or Jerry Doouglas. You won't regret it!

What a great recording by a group of aging artists that only get better with time.. I am sure I will wear the cd out shortly... Keep on truckin peter !

This concert recording was worth the 12-year wait
Peter Rowan has fronted some legendary bands but none better than this outfit. More than an hour of flawless live music, and the quality of the sound is remarkable. Our man is in control, in great voice, and Panama Red and Ancient Tones never sounded better. Does any American musician play an instrument better and more expansively than Jerry Douglas plays dobro?

At last a great Peter Rowan live CD
We waited a long time for a great Peter Rowan live CD, and this is very great. Pete was in great voice back then and the recording quality is nothing short of stunning. The best bits are the songs without jams - here the singing, playing and alround togetherness is startling. But the jam track dent it for me. Fantastic playing of course, but the context for those bits was being there. Also Rowan is on record as citing great live versions of Free Mexican Airforce, Break My Heart Again, etc, in the can and they ain't here. Whatever, this is a great, great CD, Roger in London

Very very good, thank you!!!

Fantastic CD!!! Great music and excellent sound quality!
I love this disc from start to finish! Glad to see at least one reggae song included. Thanks to CD Baby for making this available and for sending it so quickly.

awesome cd that sparks many a happy memory...
I was in attendence for this show, as was my future wife Lynn. Because I had told her so much about Telluride and many of the artists that frequent the festival, she showed up in 1994, as a complete and very welcomed surprise! It was the first time she witnessed Peter, Sam, and Jerry, and it was a gas to share this with her. We fell more in love as the show went on...
This cd brings back many fond memories! The boys were hotter than hot that night.
Peace, David
