ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Pianist PETER VINOGRADE is known as an outstanding interpreter of J.S. Bach and contemporary composers. He regularly tours the U.S., Canada, and Asia. As a chamber musician, he has appeared at the Caramoor, Mostly Mozart, and Wolftrap Festivals. As a collaborative artist, he toured throughout Asia with violinist Midori, including her Singapore debut. Vinograde's numerous distinctions began with first prize in the 1971 J.S. Bach International Competition in Washington, D.C., followed by his New York debut at Carnegie Recital Hall and an N.E.A.-sponsored Alice Tully Hall recital. His primary teacher was Zenon Fishbein. Dr. Vinograde teaches at the Manhattan School of Music, where he created his “Bach for Pianists” class, and at Lehman College (CUNY).

CD 1: The Capriccio, a delightful early work, moves through pleading, lamenting, and celebrating, ending in a brilliant fugue on a posthorn call. French Suite 4 includes a praeludium and second gavotte from BWV 818A; the sarabande is the centerpiece. The A minor Prelude and Fugue is a miniature toccata. English Suite 5 is intensely chromatic, and has strong motivic relationships between the movements, variation-like. Partita 4 is a celebration of D Major, ending in a scintillating fugue.

CD 2: The Italian Concerto’s highlight is the Adagio, with its restless 6/8 vs. 3/4 rhythm and long, intensely expressive arioso lines. The E major Concerto is highly chromatic and energetic, with a beautiful siciliano from the mezzo aria Stirb in Mir, Welt (Cantata 169). The D minor Concerto’s Adagio, a passacaglia, has 4 different interpolations of the arioso line, which I have mixed and matched.
