ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Baseball Songs Sports Heroes 3

The CD Baseball Songs Sports Heroes 3 has a great variety of baseball or baseball related songs (14) and 4 bonus songs. It features songs about the Boston Red Sox, Chicago Cubs, New York Yankees, New York Mets and Tampa Bay Rays. There are songs about the beloved Gil Hodges of the Brooklyn Dodgers, Ebbets Field, a New York Mets fan, Red Sox Hall of Famer Frank Malzone, as well as the never to be forgotten trio of Bob Elliot, Tommy Holmes, and Sibby Sisti of the Old Boston Braves. There is even a song about Chief Wahoo, which should be banned from baseball for its bigoted depiction of Native Americans. The most zany sports figure in history was also one of the greatest major league pitchers of all time. Rube Waddell comes alive once more but in song! There are even four bonus songs on this CD including one of my great home town of Lynn, Massachusetts which remains in my heart as well as a song of salvation and two great Christmas songs .

This fourth CD Album has 13 songs wonderfully sung, produced and arranged by Phil Coley. Award Winning Danny Mack has also enriched greatly this CD by singing, producing and arranging 6 songs. Both are tremendous artists! Danny has also co-written with Joe Pickering Jr two of the bonus songs. Joe also wrote all of the other songs on this CD.

Even before this CD was released noted authors, sports journalists, owners of popular website sports blogs, and radio personalities and other fans have made testimonials re: this CD and/or individual songs. Their quotes are included throughout this CD insert liner notes.

For your further information, the first, second and third CD’s Baseball Songs Sports Heroes 1 and 2 and Sports Songs and Beyond were accepted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame Sound Library. Some of the songs have played in an HBO film, major T.V. and radio networks as well as the song lyrics reprinted in major sports books and newspapers.

About Joe Pickering Jr:

"Baseball wasn't a religion in my Mother’s and Father’s house but my brother and I were only allowed to pray for one Major League baseball team: THE BOSTON RED SOX." -- Joe Pickering, Songwriter and owner of the music publishing company King of the Road Music.

I wrote my first song lyric at 12 and have been writing since then. For the past several years I’ve concentrated on baseball and sports songs in the last three CD’s except the Bonus Songs which
are featured at the end of each CD. Three of these CD’s have been accepted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame Sound Library. I hope this CD Baseball Songs Sports Heroes 3 will soon join the 3 CD’s in the Sound Library of the Hall! I appreciate the marvelous singing and fine creative work of Phil Coley and Danny Mack. I hope all will enjoy this CD.

Phil has also co-written a number of songs with me over the years. Phil Coley has immense talent. Thank you so much for teaming with me Phil over the years. It has been a great pleasure to work with a Pro!!

About Danny Mack

It has been my great pleasure to work with my friend Danny Mack who is the singer, producer, arranger for six of the songs on this CD. He also has been at times my co-writer over many years. SONGS AND TIMES ON THE CD BASEBALL SONGS SPORTS HEROES 3

“Baseball Songs Sports Heroes was the single best collection of original baseball songs in our library. It ‘was’ because we now own Volume 3 and it just keeps gets better each and every time. First Joe & Phil hit a home run, then a grand slam, and now they’ve just hit a walk off super slam!”
Baseball Almanac, Inc.
"Where what happened yesterday, is being preserved today."

“We’ve been proud to include Joe Pickering’s CDs in the GreenBookofSongs.com®’s database of songs by subject. His baseball songs highlight not only the sport and its heroes, but also the values of fairness and courage that make the game our treasured American pastime.”

1.CHIEF WAHOO IS A YAHOO 3:29 Phil Coley Producer and Artist Joe Pickering Jr. Songwriter

This song Chief Wahoo is a Yahoo sends a powerful message to the baseball world that racism against Native Americans needs to end now and forever.

Gerald Wofford-Host, Native News Today Television Program Tulsa, Oklahoma and Cherokee Citizen

Joe Pickering Jr believes that Chief Wahoo is the number one example of institutional bigotry in Major League Baseball and should have gone the way of Black Face but it remains on uniforms and flashes across the T.V. screen wherever Major League Baseball is played. The Chorus of the song says it all and what baseball should do about it.

CHORUS

CHIEF WAHOO IS A YAHOO BASEBALL BE TRUE
TO THE IDEALS JACKIE ROBINSON TAUGHT YOU
IT’S NOT ENOUGH TO RETIRE NUMBER FORTYTWO
MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL BAN CHIEF WAHOO!

2. EBBETS FIELD 4:01 Phil Coley Producer and Artist Joe Pickering Jr. Songwriter

Your lyrics ABOUT GIL HODGES AND EBBETS FIELD were a real day-maker for me! Reading them gave me the opportunity to stop and take a stroll down memory lane - since the Dodgers and Ebbets Field were so much a part of my boyhood. It’s obvious you love what you do and your songs will surely bring joy to the legions of Brooklyn baseball fans who remember “dem bums” with great affection and nostalgia - the way I do!!

Marty Markowitz
Brooklyn Borough President

"Of all of the ballparks that carry the label 'classic,' none is more classic than Ebbets Field. Its absence from the current baseball landscape saddens all of us ballpark fanatics. The fact that it was the home park for only one World Series champion in its 45 seasons is a shame, but the music and lyrics of Ebbets Field really capture what a glorious victory it was in 1955! Those magnificent memories come alive through this song."

Joe Mock, webmaster of BASEBALLPARKS.COM joemock@baseballparks.com

CHORUS

EBBETS FIELD IN BROOKLYN WHERE THE DODGERS CAME TO PLAY
HELD US ALL TOGETHER LIKE NUNS WE’D PRAY
MAKE THE YANKS LOSE THEIR SWAGGER LET DEM BUMS HAVE THEIR DAY!
BUT YEAR AFTER YEAR THE BRONX BOMBERS BOMBED AWAY!

3. GIL HODGES 3:51 Phil Coley Artist and Producer Joe Pickering Jr. Songwriter
Gil Hodges was a remarkable baseball player, manager, and far more important a man of great stature. One of America’s most famous Sports Journalists and author said this about the song:

Joe Pickering Jr. has captured great Old Brooklyn Dodgers star Gil Hodges in all his essence. This song will be sung when Hodges makes it to the baseball Hall of Fame.

Maury Allen
Sports journalist and author

Another great quote: Gil Hodges was a gentleman, an outstanding ballplayer and a WWII veteran. His failure to be inducted in the Hall of Fame is a travesty and Joe Pickering's wonderful lyrics will tell you why.

Gary Bedingfield
Baseball in Wartime (Founder and Editor)
http://www.baseballinwartime.com/
gary@baseballinwartime.com

Chorus:

THE BOYS OF SUMMER LOOK DOWN FROM THE SKY
IN DISBELIEF THEY SHAKE THEIR HEADS AND PONDER WHY
THE HALL OF FAME VOTED GIL HODGES FELL ONE VOTE SHY
WHY MAKE THE BASEBALL WORLD AND GIL’S WIDOW CRY?

4. FRANK MALZONE 3:47 Phil Coley Artist and Producer Joe Pickering Jr. Songwriter

The song says it all! Frank is a Hall Of Famer in every way and should be in Cooperstown today! Great job on the song!

Dan Murphy Esquire a big Frank Malzone and Red Sox fan!
www.mlgllc.com/

"Frank Malzone was an all-star man on and off the Fenway turf, and the song fits him like a glove."

Bob Keaney Sports Writer/Historian/ North Shore Navigators/Jewish Journal

Joe Pickering Jr said, “I was fortunate to interview the Red Sox Hall of Fame third baseman Frank Malzone. I always admired his great abilities with a bat and glove but there is much more. Frank is a greater family man and a man of service to the community.

Frank Malzone himself said about this song,” “ The song about me captures the essence of my career and more it gives the reason why I succeeded on the ball field and in life. That reason is my late wife Amy.”

5. RED SOX NATION 5:29 Danny Mack Artist and Producer Joe Pickering Jr. Songwriter

"Joe Pickering has done it again, and once again has tapped into the essence of being a Red Sox fan. I was proud to have been an inspiration for a previous Red Sox song ("The Bravest Red Sox Fans") and now Joe has added to his growing repertoire with such songs as "The Green Monster" and "Red Sox Nation." Keep on Keeping the Faith, Joe!"

Will Red Sox Nation one day grow into Red Sox World?

CHORUS

NATHAN COBB COINED THE PHRASE RED SOX NATION
DAN SHAUGHNNESSY MADE IT A SENSATION
THESE TWO BOSTON GLOBE STAFF STARTED IT ALL
ONE DAY THEY'LL MAKE IT INTO BASEBALL'S HALL
RED SOX NATION NOW HAS AN OFFICIAL ORG
THANKS RED SOX AND FIRST PRESIDENT REM DAWG!

6. THE GREEN MONSTER 4:47 Danny Mack Producer and Artist Joe

Pickering Jr Songwriter

Fenway Park is perhaps America's most beloved Ball Park. The Green Monster’s 240 foot wall standing at Fenway since 1912 is by far Fenway's best known feature. Award winning Danny Mack with his voice, talent, and good humor bring the Green Monster instantly alive. Through Danny the Green Monster tells his story to the world about his long life at Fenway Park. The Green Monster "modestly" takes much of the credit for the Boston Red Sox success and even some of the failure over the years. Whether you are 5 or 95 years old, whether you are a sports fan or not, you will enjoy Danny Mack's wonderful heartfelt and funny rendition of the song the Green Monster. Danny also arranged and produced this song. When you go to Fenway Park or see the Green Monster on the TV screen you may remember it through this song The Green Monster!

CHORUS

I’M TWO HUNDRED FORTY FEET LONG AND GREEN
MILLIONS HAVE SEEN ME ON THE TV SCREEN
NO MAJOR LEAGUE BALLPARK HAS A WALL LIKE ME
I’M THE GREEN MONSTER IN BASEBALL HISTORY
Repeat third and fourth lines of chorus

There is much more than the Chorus of this song! So, listen to all of it!

7. THE HORROR KING 4:56 Phil Coley Artist and Producer Joe Pickering Jr. Songwriter

Joe Pickering Jr.'s The Horror King channels the power of one of Boston's greatest fans to strike fear in the heart of the opposing team. The song calls for things more scary than a swam of midges to Joba Chamberlain, and could be the secret weapon needed to bring the Red Sox back to the promised land.

Matt O'Donnell – Fenway West
http://www.fenwaywest.com/

Attention Baseball Fans! Sports Fans! Horror Fans! The Horror King is a humorous novelty song with lots of twists within a baseball theme. It has scary and fun music and words that will bring laughter to many beyond sports as well as motivate any baseball fan and, of course those in the Red Sox Nation.
You don't have to be a sports fan to enjoy it! Horror Fans who delight in hearing fun fear in their ear and heart may love this song! To give you some idea of The Horror King just read the first several lines. It sets the stage for fear filled with fun! Enjoy!

EVERYBODY LOVES NEIL DIAMOND’S SONG SWEET CAROLINE
THE FENWAY FAITHFUL ALWAYS SING THIS SWEET VALENTINE
BUT WHEN THE RED SOX CHANCES ARE SADLY BLEAK
WE DON’T NEED A SONG WE NEED TO FREAK

OUT AT OUR FOE WITH A BONE CHILLING BATTLE CRY
THAT RALLIES THE SOX FROM LOW TO A WORLD SERIES HIGH
BY TURNING UP THE FEAR DIAL WE’LL GIVE THEIR FOE FITS
WE’LL SCARE THE OPPOSITION OUT OF THEIR WITS

8. THE YANKEES AREN’T THE YANKEES ANY MORE 3:33 Phil Coley Artist and Producer Joe Pickering Jr. Songwriter

CHORUS

THE YANKEES AREN’T THE YANKEES ANYMORE
THEY’RE PLAYING LIKE THE RED SOX OF YORE
LATELY A BRIDESMAID RARELY A BRIDE
WHATEVER HAPPENED TO YANKEE PRIDE?

Joe Pickering Jr has the proverbial hit on his hands once again. But this song is equivalent to Reggie say I am the straw that stirs the drink, Munson can only stir it bad. If The Yankees Weren’t The Yankees Anymore then Joe would be wasting his talent. In several of the songs Joe uses the Yankees as a measuring stick. Would Joe’s songs be as good if he compared all the teams to the Cleveland Indians or The Brewers Aren’t The Brewers Anymore? Well maybe the Expos would work there.Once again Joe played the Yankees trump card and gave us some feel good music or kick back music. Joe pays tribute to the Yankees without anyone noticing.

9. ONE STRIKE AWAY 4:12 Phil Coley Artist and Producer Joe Pickering Jr. Songwriter

LABOR DAY SEPTEMBER SECOND TWO THOUSAND AND ONE
MIKE MUSSINA AND DAVID CONE DUEL IN THE FENWAY SUN
RED SOX VERSUS YANKEES IN PERFECT WEATHER
PERFECT GAME IN THE MAKING WHAT COULD BE BET

Joe Pickering Jr. continues to capture the history of baseball with his latest song One Strike Away. Having watched the Mussina near perfect game, and spoke to Carl Everett years later, it brought me back to the drama of that Sunday night in Fenway Park.
Mike Silva - http://www.nybaseballdigest.com/ (Radio Personality)

10. MY FATHER CURSED ME (DAD MADE ME A METS FAN!) 3:52 Phil Coley Artist and Producer Joe Pickering Jr.Songwriter

As usual, Joe Pickering takes a childhood memory and makes it a reality. With just one phrase Joe turns out an amazing composition. It is truly an honor to have the opportunity to listen Joe's music and Phil Coley's singing.

Frankie The Sports Guy (Radio personality ) AM 1240 WGBB in NY & Blog Talk Radio On The Internet

11. HEY! HEY! TAMPA BAY!! 4:05 Danny Mack Artist and Producer Joe Pickering Jr. Songwriter

“An outstanding musical salute to the TB Rays, and must have CD for all Tampa Bay Rays fans. I simply love the Hey Hey Tampa Bay song!
Karl C. Groff Clearwater, FL
Big time Tampa Bay Rays Fan

CHORUS

HEY! HEY! TAMPA BAY GO! GO! ALL THE WAY
HEY! HEY! TAMPA BAY WIN THE GAME TODAY
WE’RE THE FANS OF THE TAMPA BAY RAYS
THIS IS OUR TIME WE LIVE FOR RAYS DAYS!
WE’RE THE FANS OF THE TAMPA BAY RAYS
THIS IS OUR TIME WE LIVE FOR RAYS DAYS!

12. GOD CREATED THE CUBS 3:50 Phil Coley Artist and Producer Joe Pickering Jr. Songwriter

To all heart broken Cubbie fans who have lived and died with the Cubs for over a hundred years, this song is for you. I believe God truly does have a plan for you! Listen and you hear what it is.

I grew up going to Wrigley Field and experiencing the ecstasy and the agony that came with being a Cubs fan. Joe Pickering’s take on the emotional roller coaster that we experience is right on the mark. It’s a fitting tribute, Joe. These earthly victories don’t really matter----we’re waiting to win the World Series to beat all worlds!”
Carole Easterling (Performing Rights Director, BMI, and former Chicagoan)

" Joe and Phil continue to tell great stories about baseball's history through their music. They are also able to capture the agony of over 100 years without a Chicago Cubs World Series! Maybe, God really does have a heavenly plan for our Cubs."

13. BOB ELLIOT, TOMMY HOLMES, SIBBY SISTI 3:46 Phil Coley Artist and Producer Joe Pickering Jr. Songwriter

MY EARLIEST BASEBALL MEMORY I WAS JUST A KID
AND, I WANT TO TELL YOU WHAT THREE BOSTON BRAVES PLAYERS DID
IT WAS AFTER THE SEASON’S LAST GAME WE WERE OUT ON THE STREET
AND RUNNING DOWN THE SIDEWALK CAME THREE BRAVES ELITE

MY MOM AND POP CALLED OUT AND THEY SLOWED TO A WALK
AND TURNING BACK THEY CROSSED THE STREET TO US JUST TO TALK
THEY GAVE AUTOGRAPHS AND MORE A LIFE LONG MEMORY
THEIR NAMES BOB ELLIOT, TOMMY HOLMES AND SIBBY SISTI

14. RUBE WADDELL Phil Coley Artist and Producer Joe Pickering Jr. Songwriter

As one newspaper noted upon Rube's death, "It would require volumes to tell of Waddell's exploits." Joe Pickering thus faced a daunting task in writing a song about baseball's most eccentric and colorful character. Joe met the challenged head-on. He has captured the essence of Rube in lyrics which alternate between the whimsical and somber. Those may seem to be contradictory notions but such was the life of Rube Waddell

"Rube" Screenwriter Dan O’Brien
dan@rubewaddell.net

Excerpt from the Rube Waddell song

MISTER MACK HEAVEN’S WAITED FOR YOU SINCE YOUR BIRTH (St. Peter)
YOUR HALL OF FAME BASEBALL SKILLS WERE HAILED ON EARTH (St. Peter)
PLEASE HELP US OUT MISTER MACK HEAVEN’S IN A STEW (St. Peter)
YOU’RE THE ONE MAN ABLE TO MANAGE YOU KNOW WHO (St. Peter)

BONUS SONGS:

15. BARTENDER DIVINE 3:51 Danny Mack Artist and Producer Co-writer with Joe Pickering Jr.

Excerpt from Bartender Divine This is a song of salvation.

I WAS SEARCHING FOR SOMETHING I LOOKED EVERYWHERE
FOUND NO HOPE IN THE BOTTLE IT JUST WASN’T THERE
NOW YOUR HOUSE IS MY HAVEN AND WHERE I MUST STAY
PLEASE LISTEN DEAR JESUS TO WHAT I HAVE TO SAY

16. LYNN THE CITY OF FIRSTS THE CITY OF WIN with narrative 5:32 Danny Mack Artist and Producer Co-writer with Joe Pickering Jr.

The Lynn Museum and Historical Society believes the rhyme "Lynn, Lynn The City of Sin" originated as early as the first war in the Barbary Coast area which had twenty or more saloons. These saloons have long since disappeared, though the Lynn rhyme keeps on being repeated to this day much to the chagrin of Lynners and Lynners at heart wherever they may be. The song about Lynn as a city of WIN is a final rousing response to that rancid rhyme. It was written by native born and Lynner at heart Joe Pickering Jr. songwriter and Danny Mack international recording artist and CMAA award winner and Hall of Famer. This song and recording is especially dedicated to Mrs. Dorothy Pickering Joe’s late Mother

17. WALL STREET CHRISTMAS 3:13 Phil Coley Artist and Producer Joe Pickering Jr. Songwriter

Wall Street Christmas top independent Christmas song for 2008 as reported by the Music Review

Based on 200 Radio Station Play List the Music Review out of New York State reports that Wall Street Christmas finished No 1! Wall Street Christmas beating out Christmas songs by such stars as Miley Cyrus, Taylor Swift, Neil Sedaka, and the Jonas Brothers. Their songs also made the top 25 independent Christmas songs for 2008 according to The Music Review report. In addition Wall Street Christmas was one of the featured Christmas songs in the Green Book of Songs, the” bible” of popular songs by subject, or of thematic guides to music

The World economy is in shambles. Just about everybody is being effected but only Wall Street is getting a big bailout? Nearly all of us might be wondering why? Joe Pickering says, “I thought I would write a song about this baleful bailout!”
An Average Joe sings a message to Santa Congress clamoring to know why Main St is treated so differently than Wall Street. . Why all of this corporate welfare and bailout? Phil Coley the singer and producer performs this song wonderfully!
CHORUS

I WANT A WALL STREET CHRISTMAS MAIN ST. NOEL WON’T DO
YES, A WALL STREET CHRISTMAS SANTA CONGRESS MAKE IT TRUE
PLEASE PUT A NOTE UNDER MY CHRISTMAS TREE
ONE FREE SHOPPING SPREE AT THE U.S. TREASURY

18. PRESIDENT OBAMA MERRY CHRISTMAS TO YOU 3:16 Phil Coley Singer and Producer Joe Pickering Jr. Songwriter

The song, “PRESIDENT OBAMA MERRY CHRISTMAS TO YOU! “
Is a truly great Americana song!

Joel T. Mann
Program & Operations Director
Community Radio WERU-FM

joel@weru.org

Phil Coley sings with deep inspiration my song President Obama Merry Christmas to you! Yes, our country is in troubling times along with much of the world. But, we don't need a Santa. This song's Christmas wish asks President Obama to be true to our U.S. Constitution. With stirring music and song lyrics, it hopefully will evoke meaningful emotion in many an American's heart. America can and will shine from sea to sea.
In summary Juliana L’Heureux writes, "Writing clever lyrics is a creative art where the lyricist can transcend generations. Joe Pickering has this special gift. His lyrics with music are entertaining and educational. Most important, every lyric he creates reaches out to inspire us to improve our frail human condition. His clever phrases entertain us while telling a timeless story. Joe is my favorite song writer, lyricist and one of the best friends a challenged writer like me can ever have."

Dedicated to the Bangor Public Library

In completing my fourth CD Baseball Songs Sports Heroes 3 I relied once more on the expertise and the resource materials of the Bangor Public Library. My last three CD's were accepted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame Sound Collection. Without the strong resource support of the Bangor Public Library (Mrs Barbara McDade and her staff) a number of my songs could never have been written. Hooray for the Bangor Public Library!!
