Album Notes
PERCEPTION COAST by Sono Ondo and Phil Slander.

Produced by Phil Slander and engineered, edited, spliced, re-sampled, arranged and realized by Sono Ondo, PERCEPTION COAST came into being while preparing a Rock n Roll song, “Loaded Gun”, by Phil Slander for release. A reworking process began in March 2018 and continued daily until July, by which time six different deviations or musical pathways had came into being. After visiting Hay Zeelen’s mastering suite in Santanyi in September, the songs underwent further changes to ready them for stem mastering on December 6th 2018. Each track develops and explores similar source material within a variety of different popular dance music sub genres.

Phil says - “The process was a bit like musical, correspondence chess; Chris would make a new arrangement of fragments taken from the original single, after many listenings I would then review the material and suggest possible edits, areas of further development and how the atmosphere of the track could be heightened. Soon an updated arrangement would hit the Dropbox and I would marvel at how Chris, as well as taking some of my suggestions on board, had also gone further into unknown territory. I guess it was then we learnt that a certain degree of compromise/flexibility on both sides, produced a better creative result. Chris and I have known each other since 1992 and in 2018 we made our first record together. Thanks buddy!"

Chris says - "It is new music. There's such a fine line between boring and banging as f*ck! I hope this noise makes people smile."

"Dense. A Revolutionary piece of music" - Hay Zeelen.

This track began life as an Acid House mix without percussion and morphed into an Ambient Techno fantasy. A 10 measure structure, climbing stacked chords, siren song and serpentine electronics create a place of solace, inner contemplation and heightened perception, like viewing virgin coastline from an ancient mountain-top seat.

Tension as spliced drum loops from the original master weather a deluge of sampled break-beats, squirming synths and rolling bass finally gives way to soothing choirs and droplets of joy, as harmony is restored. A percussive celebration of Electronica to remind us that even in our darkest moments, balance and peace will triumph, just as sure as sun follows rain.

Spoken lines of self assurance and determination, a mystical music box in the attic opens and the vapor of projects past entices us to join the dance. Sub bass melts the floor and the tamborim cracks while synth stabs, Morse code and dulcimers punch through the edgy atmosphere. This Trip Hop jam will bewitch even the most adept listener, so don’t dance alone.

A homage to the halcyon days of New Beat, this sparse, hypnotic track builds greedily in the dark and reveling in our discomfort, would have us dance ’til dawn…

The predator stalks and the prey seeks to flee as a driving, breathless theme glides through a shifting vortex of twilight harmonies and Electro beats, towards a crystal horizon.

Rock vocals, Acid House beats and wha wha form a volatile compound suspended in an ether of cyclic occurrences and yet the paradox of traveling without moving is made possible through sound.

Enjoy this record with friends at a listening party on high quality stereo equipment or on your own in a dimly lit room through headphones. The abstract nature of this music requires multiple plays to fully appreciate the heightened perception brought about by the same.
