Album Notes
After forming in 1998, The Phoenix Trap built on some early adversity to become a rising new force in the regional, original music scene. After three different line-ups, the band found the right mix with its current roster Teresa Kelly (vocals), Chad Gorn (guitar), Mark Gardner (bass) and Mark Robart (drums). With Kelly, the band developed a more definitive pop-rock sound. The change in sound was fueled by Kelly's radio-friendly vocals and exciting stage presence.

Unofficially, The Phoenix Trap marked the start of the Kelly years with the release of the demo 'Skywriting' in 2001. With the demo finished and a string of gigs under their belts, they ventured into Soundgun Studios in Philadelphia to record their first full-length album. The eponymous work was recorded in October of 2001 with acclaimed producer Edan Cohen (Burlap Palace, Brian Seymour and Songs: Ohia) and released in March 2002 at The Fire in Philadelphia. The album includes 12 songs and guest appearances by Philadelphia notables Mike "Slo-Mo" Brenner, Elliot Levin and Quiara Hudes.

With a solid studio recording to push, The Phoenix Trap has become a band to watch. Now in regular rotation on weekends at the Grape Street Pub in Philadelphia, the band has shared the stage with Virgin Recording Artist the Exies (named a Band to Watch in 2003 by Rolling Stone magazine), Mark McAdam (of Sumack) and Shoe Suede Blues (featuring Peter Tork). They have also shared the stage with top regional artists like K-Floor (Treasure), IKE (Bisbee Roadkill), as well as unsigned artists Transistor Rodeo, DownCircleBack, Stargazer Lily, Amber DeLaurentis and Nancy Falkow, to name a few.

The Phoenix Trap has performed in New York, Boston, Baltimore, New Jersey and throughout eastern Pennsylvania. The band has also occasionally stripped down its electric set to play the area's growing number of acoustic venues. They continue to garner radio airplay and make on-air appearances throughout the region.

The band is currently working on songs for a new album to be recorded in the beginning of 2004.

"Not Me" is a refreshing rock tune that's fun to listen to.
If you’re looking for pop flavored rock combined with a dash of punk, look no further than “Not Me” by the Phoenix Trap. Where in a time where vocals are screamed and production takes first place it’s refreshing to see a band that has put together a rock tune with a classic soaring and honest sounding edge to it. There is no question when listening to this track: It’s just a fun track to listen to, plain and simple. The female vocals really work, without resorting to screaming and although they might tend to be a bit buried volume wise beneath the guitars at certain points in the song, they fit well with the rest of the instrumentation and add, quite nicely, to the track as a whole. Listen for the driving chorus and an appropriately climatic guitar bridge.

Overall the mix sounds good, with a great idea behind the song that could be enhanced only by a bit of extra production and polish. Perhaps a bit of tweaking on the volume levels of the vocals in relation to the other instruments, but the important thing is that “Not Me” stands on its own two feet as a good song in itself.

A solid rock tune, with a catchy hook that is worth a listen.

Well structured & well-written songs that show lots of talent and experience.
This is a Philadelphia based band that plays some good Pop Rock music! This is the bands debut Cd release. their music has a strong powerful sound with some classic Jazz sounds induced within. They have well structured & well written songs that show lots of talent & experience. To even vary their sound more they toss in some flute, saxophones, trombone, trumpet & more into the mix. My favorite part of the band was Teresa kelly's vocals. She has a very powerful & beautiful voice that ranges from Rock, Classical & sometime almost Punk sound! This band was a nice change from most of the stuff I get for review!

One of the best albums of 2002 (link goes to band interview)
The Phoenix Trap has been a constant in the Philadelphia music scene for almost five years. After securing a permanent line-up in 2000 with the addition of vocalist Teresa Kelly, the band has forged ahead and released one of the best albums of 2002 -- the band's self-titled full length. With the soulful, well-constructed guitar playing of Chad Gorn, the band's primary song writer, combined with the seductive voice of Teresa and solid rhythm section of Mark Gardner and Mark Robart, the band has been gaining the local, national and worldwide recognition and attention they deserve.

This cd is really great. It has all diffrent types of songs, and this band has a very unique sound. I cannot think of a band they sound like.
