ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
I do not see myself as a political [activist] composer and have always been resistant to its allure in the contemporary classical music genre. This project, the experimental short film based on the short story, An Aesthetics of Rat bites by South African author Stacy Hardy, was thus somewhat challenging, but I found musical solace in the first-person narration of the story and approached the work from that angle. The structure of director Jaco Bouwer’s film is a montage of self documentation of the protagonist, ‘rat-girl’ (Instagram star) contemplating rat bites as a socio-economic, political and artistic [media] phenomenon.

The viewpoint of the film suggests an audio-visual journal, following the protagonist as she works towards realising a video/art installation. I frequently approach composition conceptually. The interaction with the text, rather than the film (the visuals were mostly cut to the soundtrack), suggested an introspective and reserved (withdrawn) sound presence, which is specifically reflected in the longest track on the cd, An Aesthetics of Rat Bites. This work epitomises my sonic interests, which include secondary melodies (as I call them), textural linearity, transparency and MIDI (peripherals). The latter was used to facilitate the creation of high pitched sounds to support the ASMR (close whispering) talking technique of the artist in the short film.
