Sunken Forest

World Blues/Folk "Burtt's pastiche of styles intrigues. The artist has nailed a vision. moody, seductive, Paul Simonesque, broodingly trippy."

Album Notes
Peter Joseph Burtt, a lifelong percussion student spent 3 years in the Gambia, Ghana, and Zimbabwe living with traditional musicians and learning to play music with them. The ultimate lesson was to take the music, studied with respect, and to reinterpret the music he had grown up listening to: the blues, folk songs, Bob Dylan, the Clancy Brothers, Hindustani music, and 3 originals. Sunken Forest features the instrumentation of a souped up Mandinka kora or harp, lush acoustic guitars, lap steel guitars, light percussion, and evocative vocals. The record plays like a river and allows listeners who are not died in the wool world music or traditional folk fans to hear the kora in an arrangement that is hopefully more accessible.

Produced by Corey Harris, this record was made like a field recording or an old folk record. We set up microphones and cut tracks for 3 days and that was it. It is a very honest record.

"I think we caught a vibe." Corey Harris, Rounder Records Recording Artist

"Sunken Forest ... like our consciousness, our ancient roots ... deep and rich, pulling images and emotions from a primal place that compels us with its pure familiarity. It's in this voice, the intuitive way he touches the strings, the sense that all of it is an echo from some fundamental beyond." Drew Kampion, Editor Surfer's Path Magazine

“The heart behind it all is what counts the most, and you seem to be able to transcend boring technical details and put focus on the story, the mood, the power of life and the magical fact that the soil beneath our feet is able to recycle itself in a way we can never fully understand, only respect and support." Andreas Aase, Norwegian Composer/Recording Artist

Peter'Sunken Forest is WONDERFUL
Peter's last album is really good. Peter was able to adapt american blues or folk song (Dylan, Skip James..) to West Africa groove. All the songs of this CD are wonderful. Peter's music is perfect for loving life !

Soulful singing and great playing
I love the vibe of this CD. Peter Joseph has a very soulful voice and his guitar and kora playing is a real treat.

Positive vibe throughout!
Got the CD last week and can't keep from listening to it. Very well recorded, emotional vocals, phenomenal arrangements and a surprising song selection. I'd never expected a Flash and the Pan song next to a Magic Sam number played on Kora. And Peter Joseph Burtt's own songwriting fits in perfectly! There's this positive vibe throughout which makes me press the "repeat CD" button everytime the last song ends.
