ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Duo Plaisir d'amour started with a rehearsal of a Celtic folk band. For Anouk is was her last rehearsal with them, to play one final concert, for Jos it was his first rehearsal to find out if he wanted to join them. One rehearsal was enough to know they wanted to play together, and so shortly after that last concert Plaisir d'amour was started.
They love playing traditional music from Europe, and Jos always has enough inspiration to write some original tunes too.
Recently they added songs to their repertoire, which can be heard on this CD too.

1. Stensele Polska / Blomgrens polska.
trad. Swedish - Celtic harp, violin
Stensele is a village in the North of Sweden. Blomgrens was named after its composer.

2. Ne chomin ket da sonjal / Ridee a six temps / Tri Martolod
trad. Breton - Celtic harp, violin
'I won't stay dreaming' is the title on this first song, played as an instrumental piece. This song goes into a dance, which leads to another song with the name 'three sailors'. The last song is also instrumental, and played more like a dance than the traditional song it is. Tri martolod is the result of living tradition: you here something and years later you play it totally different from the original.

3. Vom Truge
voice, violin, Celtic harp and psaltery
From the manuscript of princess Sophie von Nassau-Saarbrucken. This song appealed to Anouk because her two favorite pastimes are mentioned in it: music and spinning yarn.

4. Maksum
comp. Jos Koning
violin, Celtic harp
Based on two swinging violin riffs Jos composed for his advanced students.

5. Kost ar c'hoad
trad. Breton
violin, Celtic harp
A complicated dance with swinging music that Plaisir d'amour prefers to play rather than dance...

6. Isabelle
trad. Flemish
voice, Celtic harp, psaltery
A simple song from the Flemish industrial revolution, presenting the workers' hardship. A girl is asked some questions: what did you eat today? A fish with yellow stripes. Where did you catch that? In a cellar. What do you wish for your mother? An oven to bake in. What do you wish for your brother? A woman like my mother. What do you wish for yourself? A spade to dig my grave...

7. Motjesdans
comp. Jos Koning
violin, Celtic harp
Moths (motjes) are drawn to the fire...where they perish. A melody taken from the series 'Miriams Middernacht Melodieen' (Miriams Midnight Melodies) which Jos composed for his girlfriend.

8. Nachtvlucht
comp. Jos Koning
Nachtvlucht means Night flight. No, this is not a cheap airline flight, it is a flight of seabirds seen by twilight along the sea's horizon, flying to an unknown destination.

9. Femtusen man / Tullpolskan
trad. Swedish
voice, violin, Celtic harp
Jos lived in Dalarna for about 15 years, which is where this song is from. The song mocks the peasants of the 15th century peasant revolts in the Dalarna region. The dance that follows is from the same region.

10. Little Cascade
trad. Scottish
viola d'amore, Celtic harp
The tune is attributed to captain MacLennon, who claims to have written it after an experience of being tortured with dripping water in a prisoner of war camp in WO I. If this is true? It might have also been a London hotel room with a leaky tap...

11. O Dag, o langgewenste dag
trad. Dutch
voice, viola d'amore, Celtic harp
A sailor's girlfriend is happy to go see her man when he arrives from his voyage. However, she has her doubts on his loyalty, especially when he doesn't seem to remember the letters she wrote. She demands her lover to choose between herself and the sea.

12. Monaghan's jig / Tam Lin reel
trad. Irish / trad. Scottish
violin, Celtic harp
When Jos played the first tune for her, Anouk recognised it as being a bastardized version of Monaghan's jig. It is followed by audience favorite Tam Lin reel.

13. Kickis brudsvals
comp. Olle Moraeus
violin, Celtic harp
A marriage waltz from Sweden, composed by Olle Moraeus from Orsa.

14. Fyn Swyntie
comp. Jos Koning
violin, Celtic harp
In 2012 Jos composed this tune as a Hanter Dro (circle dance from Brittany).

15. Een boom in het vondelpark
lyrics: M. Vasalis
comp. Jos Koning
voice, violin, Celtic harp
The lyrics are a poem by well-known Dutch poet M. Vasalis. They tell the dramatic story of a tree being felled in the Amsterdam Vondelpark.

16. Wakker blijven
comp. Jos Koning
violin, Celtic harp
The title, meaning 'Stay Awake' is good advice to any harpists playing this tune: it is an endless shifting of levers!

17. Bruremarsj fra Norge
trad. Norwegian
viola d'amore, Celtic harp
A bridal march from Norway. These marches are quite solemn: the family sees their daughter off to her future husband's village. It may take years before they see her again!
