What Was Is

Album Notes
PlayGround is:

John Freund on Hammond B3 & Sticky Keys
Joe Bergamini on Drums & Slippery Grooves
Ritche Deraney on Guitar & Fat Fingers

PlayGround was a project that Ritche envisioned for many years. Ritche met John and asked him to come down to a gig. They started playing together on different projects and Joe was involved on one of those projects.

Ritche asked Joe & John if they would be interested in recording some of his original material. They agreed!!!!!!!

The name PlayGround came about as a result of the three of us wanting to share something about ourselves and that something is the music. Music is our PLAYGROUND.

We all have separate projects and commitments but have had a great time recording these tunes and seeing them evolve to our sound.

We wanted to capture the groove of those Organ Trio's of the 60's but make it our own way. It was with a vision of playing smart but playing in the groove. There was no rehearsal just takes and find the best one. This way it kept it fresh and live sounding.

The opening number Burnin' was written in trying to keep the tradition of the groove thang happening.
Borboelta Linda means Beautiful Butterfly in Portuguese. Something that grows and is free.
My Orange Autumn was written after listening to some Monk
Iced Blue was the first tune written for this project and dedicated to Jimmy Smith
Pilar is written for Maipi (Ritche's wife)
The Teacher is written for and dedicated to Billy Bauer, Jazz Master, mentor and friend.
EZ just keeping it simple
What Was Is = we needed to let loose a little.

Great rhythm and harmony
Just loved the rhythm, the tempo and the flow. It is so harmonious and agreeable. It fits any setting. It also sets the tone for a pleasant and relaxing atmosphere.
