Album Notes
The first time I saw Pleasure for the Empire was in the basement of a desanctified church outside of Philadelphia. A naked girl in a carnivale mask and ballet shoes gave me a purple drink and the rest of the night was a delight of color and sound which even now I can barely distinguish from a vivid dream.
The basement was a maze of painted bodies and fog. It took me over an hour to find the band. A tiny stage, normally used for symbolist puppet shows, was filled with instruments and carpets and lava lamps in the otherwise darkened room. At one point I didn't know whether I was still breathing as the wine (if that's what it was) and the perfume in the air went to my head.
Pleasure for the Empire is like the luxuriant rooms of some mythical sultan's palace.
