Album Notes
The Plymouth Canton Symphony Society is proud to announce the release of its first CD for children, Magical Tunes & Marvelous Tales, featuring The Studio Orchestra of the PCSS, under the direction of Nan Harrison Washburn, and presenting debut recordings of narrated and instrumental works inspired by well-loved children's classics.

Nan Washburn and her orchestra provide high-quality performances of works by living American composers, who reflect a multicultural diversity and a wide range of musical styles. Although the CD is geared to young listeners, the music is not “made easy,” offering more than enough breadth and complexity for the sophisticated listener.

Be tantalized by the bold quirkiness of Janika Vandervelde’s take on the timeless story of Jack and the Beanstalk, with a musical language that plentifully fuels the imagination. Be charmed and transported by the beauty of Chinese folk music, inspired by Chen Yi’s own musical heritage. Be awed by the grandeur and sonic descriptiveness of Andre Myers' Paddle to the Sea, which vividly depicts the adventures of a toy boat as it travels the Great Lakes on its way to the Atlantic Ocean. Fall in love with Alice Gomez’ inspirations on Ferdinand the Bull, charmingly characterizing one of our favorite and most memorable bovine heroes. Be enthralled by the harmonic color and lyrical evocativeness of Alexis Alrich’s Island of the Blue Dolphins, based on the true story of a Native American girl stranded alone on an island off the coast of California. And join us in singing along to Nan Washburn’s delightful rendition of the Instruments’ Song based on a traditional Austrian folk tune.

Magical Tunes & Marvelous Tales is a fresh take on music and story intertwined, and will prove to be a significant contribution to children’s repertoire. Known to improve math scores, classical music is, more importantly, food for the soul, nourishing something deep within all of us. Kids end up loving classical music, if they get a chance to hear it and aren’t told they won’t like it!

Key Selling Points:
• High quality music for children
• Breadth and complexity for listeners of all ages
• Perfect introduction to classical music
• Great companion to children’s literature
• Multi-culturally diverse, eclectic mix
• Both narrated and instrumental works
