This is a two-volume recording of Derwid's complete song output. But who is "Derwid"?

Katarzyna Sądej, mezzo-soprano, and Barbara Bochenek, pianist, enjoy performing voice-piano works that are less known to the public and deserve bigger exposure. The duo discovered the two-book set of "Dance Songs”, printed by PWM (Polish Music Publishing Company), and learned that its 33 songs were composed for Polish radio in the 1950's and 60's by none-other-than Witold Lutosławski, under the pen name "Derwid". The songs have been largely forgotten, despite their intriguing melodies and texts, largely because Lutosławski became known for his avant-garde classical music style. This recording, however, features Lutosławski’s more diverse spectrum of compositions: pop-like tunes, set to dance rhythms from all over the world.

Lutosławski began composing his Dance Songs while working at the Polish Radio as a music editor after WWII. Władysław Szpilman, the radio commissioner at the time, wanted to provide listeners with new, uplifting, and exciting songs set to popular music. Authors sent lyrics to the radio, often suggesting the type of dance to be used, and Lutosławski composed melodies - sometimes changing words, adding or taking away entire sentences. Lutosławski’s passionate tangos, sensual slow foxes, intriguing waltzes, laid back "blues", and fiery beguines made these songs top radio hits.

Katarzyna Sądej and Barbara Bochenek, also known as "Kasia & Basia", have been collaborating as a voice-piano duo in Los Angeles, performing throughout United States and Canada. They have a vast repertoire of various styles and continue to build that repertoire. Kasia and Basia bring new interpretation to art songs through small and intimate performances reflective of the genre's historical practice as well as with use of visual media. Both artists work with many living composers and continuously explore new performance styles, techniques and ideas with the intention of making art songs a genre accessible to vast audiences.
