Album Notes
Oriental Journey

This music on this CD was totally improvised and unedited from start to finish. Perhaps this is because it was recorded in a period of Edward's life in which improvisation was his primary vehicle. It has been said that improvisation is to be in 'heaven' and compostion is to be on the 'earth'. In the 5 years or so preceding this recording Ed had spend a long periods of time in the Himalayas, living in moutainside huts with his instruments practicing and digesting the years of training he had received from Budhaditya and other teachers. In fact, much of the social and musical life in places like the mountain villages surrounding Dharamsala, center around musicians and travellers from all over the world who meet together each evening to improvise together.

'Oriental Journey' was made without any commercial intentions whatsoever, in fact it almost escaped being release completely. The CD consists 18 pieces, most of them quite short. The idea with each piece was to say in 2 or 3 minutes what usually would take half an hour or more in a typical Himalayan jam session. Ed and Pat recorded on average about 15 versions of each tune in an attempt to truly "catch" that feeling.

The CD flows very sweetly. Yes, improvisation is being in heaven, but the resulting music on this CD is something very "down to earth". Very real, very basic, and very alive... a bit like the feeling you have with nothing but a backpack wandering around India and south Asia, that is the feeling this music conveys. Bring it with you on your next journey...

'Oriental Journey' was recorded by Patrick Feldner and Edward Powell in 5 days (Prague, Feb.1999) without any pre-planning. They simply sat down with their instruments and improvised about 25 short pieces highlighting unusual combinations of instruments, like sitar/duff, oud/tanpura, fretless guitar/tabla... The tapes were not sorted thru, mixed, and mastered until 4 years later in Vienna. The result is a graceful entertaining album which highlights the strong connection of these two pioneering musician who were at that time just coming to full maturity as new artists.

Edward Powell - sitar, oud, fretless guitar (acoustic steel-string)

Considered today one of the world's leading acoustic fretless guitarists, Edward is perhaps the only the playing an authentic Indian style on a fretless guitar thanks to his double decade pilgrimage with the sitar. On top of this Edward is also an accomplished oud player and has brought the makam language also to the fretless guitar captured in sounds coming from the instrument he designed and built himself which is a combination of a sarod and an oud. Recording artist, performer, teacher, instrument builder, traveler...

Born in Vancouver, coming from a musical background, Edward began taking music seriously from the age of 12 when he got his first guitar. To make a long story short, it didn't take Ed long before he was a hot rock guitarist, improviser, and composer burning the fire of his youth and pent up expression.

Edward's mainstay was virtuosic and progressive blues-rock... although he ventured well into traditional and fusion jazz also. In his early twenties Ed found himself singing and playing in bars for a number of years simply as a way to earn a decent living and support his growing craving for world travel. This situation, while giving him a tremendous amount of LIVE experience, finally drove him over the edge and to a move which had him entirely reject commerciality and electronics in music.

In 1988, off he went to India and finally spent there more than 5 years over a 10 year period involved entirely with the study of the sitar and Hindustani classical music. Much of this time was spent receiving private tuition from the world's primier sitarist Pandit Budhaditya Mukherjee.

In the early '90's Edward began performing on the sitar, North Indian classical and World fusion 'repertoire'. However it was also during this period that Edward was introduced to the oud. Later in this decade Edward began experimenting with, creating, and playing steel-string acoustic fretless guitars.

No doubt, at this point, Edward's musical (and otherwise) life was becoming rather complex and complicated... however by the mid-'90's he managed to permanently leave the electric guitar behind him. He moved to Central Europe and enjoyed a few years of creating small acoustic "ethno" groups, recording, and gigging. This began to change in the year 2000 when Edward began seriously to design and build original instruments.

Edward's life since Y2K has alternated between periods of building and playing. Not fully realising why he was doing it - rather he seemed to be 'lead' by something to continue with one after another building projects... each leading to the next. All of which seems to have finally lead him to the creation of the instrument he uses now as his main vehicle - the instrument he calls: "the Ragmakamtar". This is essentially a hybrid of a sarod, an oud, and a fretless acoustic guitar.

Patrick Feldner - oriental percussion (tabla, darbuka, duff, riqq, bendir...)

A versatile and talented percussionist native to Vienna, Pat began as many others as a progressive rock drummer. Before long Pat began travelling to India for long periods and while there acquired a profound attraction to Buddhism. Since then Pat dedicated his efforts entirely in the direction of Oriental percussion. This inspiration began first with an intensive period of tabla study and later Persian and Arabic drumming. Pat now performs in a wide variety of venues and with several top Austrian World music, Celtic, and Early music groups.
