Album Notes
"Brick & Mortar" is a tour de force. Wonderful songs, wonderfully recorded!" - Tom Paxton

...at Miz Kitty's Parlour & Vaudevillian Revue at the Mission Theatre, April 2009...

The first to come on are Kate Power
and Steve Einhorn. You probably know
them, at least, from Artichoke Music,
the store they ran for 26 years and turned
into a Portland institution. Along the way,
they’ve developed a national reputation
as folk musicians, singers and composers.
As they move into “Highway 101,” with
Power on banjo and Einhorn on guitar, I
am sent immediately to that place of safety
that can only be reached at the hands of
journeymen artists. The power and precision
of their performance gives me the
complete trust to lean into the music, to
get lost in it.

Then Power takes out a ukulele and
begins “Before You Go,” a song she wrote
for Einhorn. He joins her on guitar. It is
a sweet song with sweet harmony. Like
all good folk songs, it sounds as if nobody
wrote it. It is as if it’s always been there."

Bought Brick and Mortar at your recent visit. Before we left I
mentioned to my wife that \"live\" is always a better sound than what
you get on a CD. But I was wrong on this one. The CD is every bit
as good a sound as listening to you live. Not as fun, having the
light banter and the aura of live, but soundwise, it\'s just the
same. Excellent recording. Annamarie (the six year old you talked
with after the show) loves it!

Thanks for the great show.

I was lucky enough to catch Kate and Steve while visiting friends in New York. Their music is touching, funny, lyrical and honest. They put on a great show that reminded me that I need to get out and listen to live music. I\'ve got three other of their albums, and they are all fantastic. Give them a try - I\'m sure you\'ll love them as much as I do.

Brick and Mortar
Haunting and thoughtful, fun, pure and honest. Great new tunes from two of my favortite contemorary song crafters.

Buy it!!!
A new Kate & Steve CD is always a special occasion. The highest compliment I can give is it makes me feel great every time I play it. They are two of the Northwest's best. I was looking forward to this one and it doesn't disappoint.

can't stop hummin
About once a year a CD goes into the CD player and stays for days, and then weeks gets played over and over and over; jumps into the car on occasional auto forays, then back into the stereo; and best of all, that little player in my head keeps one of the tunes cued-up dawn to dusk (in this case usually “El Belle”) THis is one of those CDs! I’ve noticed that my husband is enjoying the same affliction. He’s been refinishing our front porch with the front door open and the stereo volume up to 24 – read “loud”. He gets home from work, turns it on while he reads or putters in the back yard. He calls it “happy music.” I just call it wonderful music from a wonderful couple of quality folks.

So, do you think we are enjoying your music? HECK YAH! We…are… LOVING it.

The Best Yet
Having listened to all their albums, we truly judge Brick and Mortar as the best of Steve and Kate's long career. The depth of their passion for life and their never-ending quest for musical excellence fills every cut. We look forward to many more albums and more pure fun at their future shows.

This is some of the most hypnotic and exceptional instrumentation I've ever heard. The rush of movement and harmony between the deep guitar minors and the banjo's soulful wail...I LOVE THIS ONE!

OK I listened to it four times in a row while I painted my bathroom. I laughed and wept and especially got all woozy over the Wallowa song and kept singing Hwy 101 and Under the Moon way after the painting was done.

What a delight!
Another winner from Kate and Steve, this time influenced by a broader Oregon experience allowing even more depth and creative spark. Their fellowship at Fishtrap in eastern Oregon was both respite and inspiration, as reflected in their music. It's easy to imagine Chief Joseph smiling as Kate pours the love into "Wallowa"--and the bicycle songs from Cycle Oregon rekindle the romance of the road. Steve's masterpiece, "Barbershop", completes the circle of life and adds humor, balancing the tragedy of "Travis John". Their musicianship is superb on every song. Love it--love our talented songbirds, Steve and Kate. Thanks for making us feel better.

Sweet and Savory
Another wonderful album from Steve & Kate! My wife and I can't seem to make a road trip of any length without one of their CD's in tow. This album just adds to our collection and variety of songs that we love from this duo. You can't possibly go wrong with this or any of their beautiful albums.
