ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
PRINCE CHARLES AND THE CITY BEAT BAND GREATEST HITS
1979-1984
VOLUME ONE

Known as the "Bad Boys Of Funk" Prince Charles and The City Beat Band created an imagery of the streets that proceeded today's Hip Hop and Rap. First generation clones of the Parliament/Funkadelics, this band led by musician/producer Charles Alexander and executive producer/producer/manager Tony Rose produced and wrote some of the finest funk music ever released.

Drawing their musical inspirations from the projects of Boston where both grew up, lived and survived. Their first album "Gang War" was dedicated to the projects, their mothers and the welfare department and included their first massive hit single "In the Streets".

The other producers on this single were none other than Maurice Starr and Michael Jonzun, close friends of the band and producers extraordinaire of the legendary New Edition, New Kids On The Block and The Jonzun Crew. All four would intermingle on various projects throughout the years creating what would be called "The Boston Black Music Scene".

Beginning in the late 70's on Rose's independent label, Solid Platinum Records, through the cassette only release of their second album "Stone Killers", straight to their worldwide signing with Virgin Records in 1983, becoming the first African American owned label (Solid Platinum Records and Productions) to sign a production deal with Virgin. Continuing on for five more years, touring, releasing albums and having enormous success in Europe, Canada and Asia, and a heavy cult status in America, their first three albums, "Gang War", "Stone Killers' and "Combat Zone" were a sign of the times and of the things to come.

In 1983, the albums "Gang War" and "Stone Killers" by Prince Charles and the City Beat Band reached Gold Album status and shared the charts with Michael Jackson’s Thriller for six consecutive months in the number one, two and three positions throughout the world and the legendary "Prince Charles and the City Beat Band” albums "Gang War", "Stone Killers", "Combat Zone" and singles, have accounted for more than Four Million sold worldwide.
