Album Notes
Protocol, the self-titled debut from Wichita, KS producers Austin "Smalls" Hanson and Jeff "DVST8" Hayes, is a conceptual instrumental hip hop album which chronicles the travels of one man and his escape from interplanetary institutionalism and 23rd century totalitarianism. A fusion of analog rhythms and digital synthesis, Protocol paints a cinematic picture of a high speed galaxy connected through media, lawlessness, and extraterrestrial politics. An electronically driven record, the production duo of Hanson and Hayes interlace both live instrumentation with hip hop programming and turntablism, giving the record a vintage yet futuristic sound quality. The boom-bap beats and innovative synth melodies mix throughout this cohesive album to forge a musical journey that has both indie and mainstream listener appeal. Cutting edge skratching and hard hitting drums combine on songs like "Made For This" and "Final Option" giving the record a deeply rooted hip hop sound, while tracks such as "A Fallen Country" and "Prairie Dogs" incorporate gritty guitar licks that produce an organic feel which leaves a funky aftertaste in your ear drums. Is protocol a science-fiction score, or a hip hop beat tape? One thing is certain, sci-fi enthusiasts and b-boys alike will enjoy this record. So follow along with the rogue traveler and his risky escape from Protocol. The quest for paradise holds a twisted and ironic turn of fate, as he discovers his knowledge and skills might save a civilization and maybe the galaxy...
