ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
PROWIZORKA JAZZ BAND (the PJB)
a Polish jazz band, formed on 13th December 1981

From the beginning, the P.J.B. participated in the Zlota Tarka Old Jazz Meetings in Warsaw.
-1982 honourable mention by Polish Nagrania for the bands soloist, Tomasz Sacha
-1983 honourable mention for the band and soloist
-1984 audience award
-1985 ZlotaTarka/Golden Washboard grand award and audience award ( the P.J.B. was the first band in the 19-year history of the festival to win both awards).

The first concerts abroad were held in 1985 under the auspices of the Polish Jazz Society at the festivals in Dunkerque (F) and Jazz Dagen Festival in Eindhoven (NL),
where the band began a cooperation with the Jazz Promotion Eindhoven Dutch Jazz Society and Timeless Records, a well-known Dutch record company. The first record, “Moonlighting” was released as early as December 1985 for the Timeless label. Later on, other recordings were made for “Polskie Nagrania” and “Poljazz”.

Since then the band has performed in concert halls, theatres and jazz-clubs in England, Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, France, Holland, Luxemburg, Germany, Portugal, Poland, Switzerland, Sweden, Hungary, Italy and numerous European jazz festivals.

Important events in bands history:

Jazz Jambore Warsaw (PL)
North Sea Jazz Festival Hague (NL)
Jazz Mecca Maastricht (NL)
Intern. Dixie & Jazz Festival Sargans (CH)
Jazzfest Gronau (D)
Intern. Festival de Jazz Dunkerque (F)
Jazz Dagen Eindhoven (NL)
Mc.Evans Jazz Festival Edinburgh
Dixiland Jazz Festival Dresden (DDR)
Jazz Festival Fribourg (CH)

In its 25-year career the PJB has recorded for radio and television in Poland, Germany, Belgium and Holland. In 1996 and 1997, in the monthly Jazz Forum poll (Jazz Top 96 and 97), the PJB was chosen the best Polish traditional jazz band. P.J.B. represented Polish Traditional Jazz in the series of concerts organised by the European Broadcasting Union (the EBU); the concert led by Andrzej Jaroszewski was put on the air live by 17 European broadcasting stations and was widely acclaimed by the audience.

The bands repertoire consists of dixieland, blues, swing and bebop as well as classical (A. Dworzak, J.S. Bach, Z. Fibich, F. Chopin) and light music (rumba, samba, bossanova). All the songs are performed in the style particular only to the Prowizorka Jazz Band and
therefore it is so difficult to classify the band as any jazz trend; however, as far as many jazz critics and presenters claim, it could well be described as a traditional, happy-jazz band.

In 1988 the PJB recorded for the Polskie Nagrania the original in its sound "Vital" record made
in cooperation with Andrzej Jagodziński (p), Tomasz Szukalski (ss), Kazimierz Jonkisz (perc.) and Roman Syrek (tb), which proves that traditional, bebop and swing musicians feel exceptionally good in the convention suggested by the Prowizorka Jazz Band.

In their professional career (from 1985 to 2006) the band cooperated with Andrzej Jagodziński (p), Roman Syrek (tb), Andrzej Antolak (ss), Jerzy Galiński (cl), Henryk Stefański (banjo) (g), Ryszard Kwaśniewski (cl) (ss), Paweł Tartanus (banjo) (g) (voc), Piotr "Bocian" Cieślikowski (ts), Janusz Witko (as), from 1985 non stop Stanisław Piotrowski (b) and from 1992 Jacek Korohoda (g); and finally, the two co-founders of the band who participated continuously right from the groups formation in 1981- Tomasz Sacha (kazoo, scat-vocal) and Jan Kalinowski (g).

The Prowizorka Jazz Band have performed together with the giants of traditional jazz music such as Acer Bilk, Chris Barber, Papa Blues Viking Jazz Band or Louisiana Ensemble New Orleans from the USA.

A new aproach to Red's Mound made great album
Once apon a time Red McKenzie and his Mound City Blue Blowers were mixing the sounds of comb, kazoo and other intermistics with jazz improvisation from such greats as Coleman Hawkins and Eddie Lang. A lot of things happen'ed since then. During the years we have seen a lot of modernisation and updating of old stuff. But is it possible to put the ideas of Mckenzie and the Blowers into the scene of today? - Is it not too much an obscure and exentric 20's/30's pheanomenia? I gues many people would think so. In that case they have not heard this album. This is modern Mound City, build on that concept, but thruly contemporary: fresh, inventive, exciting, creative and surprising. But still keeping the happy-go-lucky/goodtime feel that was typical for most jazz and a lot of pop in the late 20's and early 30's. Well informed of the history and knowing the roots, but not sounding the least like any old record. With great musianship, imagnitive fantasy and a lot of fun theese guys are doing to McKenzie what Stray Cats did to Elvis.
