Nominated for the Latin Grammy as a classical composer in 2013, Rafael is the Henry Mancini Institute composer fellow and assistant conductor since 2011. He had works premiered and recorded by artists and ensembles such as the jazz legends Terence Blanchard, Chick Corea and Brian Lynch, Symphonic Jazz Orchestra (Los Angeles), Orquestra Jazz Sinfônica do Estado de São Paulo (Brazil), Metropole Orkest (Netherlands) and Costa Rica National Orchestra. Other awards include the ASCAP Herb Alpert Young Jazz Composer Award for two consecutive years and a total of 9 Graduate Student DOWNBEAT Awards as a composer, conductor and sound engineer.
