ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Ramona Collins, long established and beloved jazz vocalist in Toledo and the Midwest, wears many hats as a recording artist, songwriter, actress, emcee, radio host, community activist and all-around carrier of the jazz torch in her community. She has organized many events over the years and been recognized for her efforts. Although known primarily as a jazz singer, Ramona is considered one of the premier entertainers in the area and sings other styles as well. She has recorded three independent cds. The lastest, "I Love Being Here With You" was recorded with jazz master and pianist extraordinaire Johnny O'neal and does not yet have a release date.

Ramona was nominated in the jazz vocalist category for the 2011 Detroit Black Music awards and considers this a huge honor because, although not from Detroit, she has worked with many of the musicians there. She is a past president of the Toledo Jazz Society and was instrumental in estalishing what used to the the Art Tatum Jazz Heritage Festival. She founded the Coalition of Women In Music (CWIM) in 2003 and would like to revive the organization to fufill its goal of one day staging a women's music festival.

Ms. Collins is an artist of substance without pretension who captivates her audiences during live performances. Her fans are fiercely loyal and come back again and again. Her performance is not only about the power of music, it is also about the power of personality. She makes you want to get to know her. She is an engaging performer whose command of the stage and vast repertoire have helped her establish a solid rapport with club, concert and festival audiences wherever she goes.

She has performed at Baker's Keyboard Lounge, The Dirty Dog Jazz Case, and other well-known jazz spots in the Midwest.

Ramona has many young fans and mentors those who seek her advice and expertise. She says one of the highlights of her career was conducting a master class in stage performance at the Berklee College of Music.

Her original song "Choices" is on her album "Live & Lovin' It".

Pure delight
What I love about this jazz CD, and live concerts in general, is the space given to the musicians and the spontaniety of the performances; there are no second takes. Ramona has a soulful jazz voice, and when she lets loose, what a powerhouse. She is respectful of her musicians and you sense the love. She has an easy, relaxed manner with her audience. Her Clinton intro to Don't explain was hilarious, and rather touching. Some of the covers, I have heard many times, but she makes them sound fresh and stamps them with her own personality. I am glad I stumbled upon this singer (thank you CD baby for giving us a way to discover talented independent artists)If you love jazz, and want to hear a singer who does it up right, look no further.
