Album Notes
“A Classical Mood” was recorded on November 10, 2008, in the comfortable confines of The Orchard Park Acoustic Barn.
Scott B. Adams, engineer and co-producer, gave this recording a lovely ambience. The music was recorded in complete performances to give this album a “live” feel.

This collection contains some of the greatest melodies ever written. None of these pieces was originally written for the guitar, but now they are arranged tp sound as if they were. Think of this CD as an orchestral pops concert for solo classical guitar.

These 13 pieces were selected because they are part of my personal musical journey, music that I grew up with. FINLANDIA is also known as the hymn Be Still, My Soul. O SACRED HEAD is best known because of J. S. Bach’s setting, and was popular as Tom Glazer’s Because All Men Are Brothers and Paul Simon’s American Tune.. The JUPITER theme from The Planets was reworked as I Vow to Thee, My Country by the composer. THE QUEEN’S DOLOUR was originally written for harpsichord in the late 1600s. The theme from Brahms’ 1st SYMPHONY was used for the Sunday School hymn We March for the Master. AVE VERUM was composed for SATB choir and piano. JESU, JOY OF MAN’S DESIRING again was treated by Bach, but it also made its way up and down the pop charts as performed by Apollo 100. O MIO BABBINO CARO is from Puccini’s only comic opera Gianni Schicchi. The MINUET by Bach was re-worked by The Toys as Lover’s Concerto (aka How Gentle Is the Rain) . The Pachelbel CANON chord progression has been the basis for hundreds of songs, and here is paired with SIMPLE GIFTS which was used by Aaron Copland in his ballet Appalachian Spring. The Rondo movement from Clementi’s SONATINA #5 rode the charts with Wayne Fontana and the Mindbenders as Groovy Kind of Love”. Versions of Faure’s PAVANE have been recorded by Ian Anderson, Barbra Streisand and others, and served as the theme for the CBC radio program Gilmore’s Albums. HOLY, HOLY, HOLY is simply one of the best known tunes in the Christian hymnbook.

As you listen, let the music fill you with its beauty; let the guitar sing these pieces to you in a whole new way. And may God’s blessings go with you.
