Album Notes
A collection of songs, dances, devotional pieces, and instrumental realizations from medieval England, encompassing the 12th through the early 14th centuries.

Despite much damage done to the manuscript sources, and much music being lost, what little medieval English music that does survive gives us a rare and precious glimpse into what must have been a vibrant musical culture.

On this recording, medieval scholar and musician Tim Rayborn presents some of this variety on reconstructions of medieval instruments, as well as with the voice. Joined by the prodigious musical talents of Annette Bauer, Phoebe Jevtovic, Shira Kammen, and Susan Rode Morris, this recording captures the spirit of a time long past.

Tim Rayborn: voice, harp, psaltery, percussion, lute, symphonie

Annette Bauer: recorders, voice
Phoebe Jevtovic: voice
Shira Kammen: vielle, harp
Susan Rose Morris: voice

The Great Early Music Scene
Apparently Berkeley, California has, along with Boston, has one of the liveliest Early Music scenes in the country. This artist and this album seem to prove this assertion. Tim Rayborn is based in Berkeley and performs regularly in the area as well as nationally and internationally. The local musicians he has gathered for this album are superb as is the recording. This is music so early that the composers are usually not known or only hinted at. But the music is quite beautiful and performed with the latest scholarship as to its performance practice. It is has educational and technical charms but you needn't be a scholar to appreciate carefully selected and well performed and recorded music. This has an honored place in my CD player and on my iPOD. It just sounds good.
