ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
What started out as a solo, acoustic project has blossomed into an electrifying mix of drums, bass, acoustic and electric guitars, dobro, lap steel, harmonica, fiddle, banjo, organ, piano and accordion. Many of Ray's songs are soulful, honest stories of love, hope and despair. Some are roguish tunes that poke fun at the foibles of life.

Drawing from the deep pool of talented Austin musicians, "45 South" features some of the best players around; Jimmy LaFave, Trish Murphy, Rachel Loy, Michael Ramos (John Mellencamp, Patti Griffin), Rick McRae (George Strait), Larry Wilson (Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Jimmy LaFave), Chris Maresh (Eric Johnson, Alejandro Escovedo), Wally Doggett (Chris Duarte, Jimmy La Fave), Wil Landin (Jimmy La Fave), Stewart Cochran (Jimmy La Fave, Abra Moore), Rich White (Peter Keane) and Louis Meyers (The Bluegrass Nibblers). Ray's long time friend and former Orange Hunters guitarist/singer Pat Cordell sings harmony and shares a songwriting credit on "Still Looking".

Released in January 2005, “45 South” has been well received in Austin and Europe. Performing at the Cactus Café, Momo’s, the Saxon Pub, Freddie’s, El Mercado, Threadgill’s, Flipnotics, Austin Songwriters Group “In the Round”, and the San Marcos River Pub, Ray has shared the stage with Jimmy LaFave, Jon Dee Graham, Bob Schneider, Matt the Electrician, Monte Montgomery, Rachel Loy and Tucker Livingston. Local Austin radio has supported Ray’s CD with spins on KGSR and KUT. Ray performed live on John Aielli’s Eklektikos and was the featured artist on the KUT “Austin Music Minute” segment. The video for the title track “45 South” has received regular airplay on the Austin Music Network. Garnering rave reviews and airplay throughout Europe has put Ray on the map with our cross-Atlantic brethren.

Worth ten quid of anyone's money
It took about 20 seconds into my first hearing of 45 South on the Bob Harris Country Show (Radio 2 in the UK)to realise that I had to have this CD. I was not dissapointed with any of the songs on the album. Overall the pace is brisk with excellent playing producing a unstoppable toe-tapping effect. I can't compare this to anything else but anyone who likes Chris Knight/Neal Casal/Whiskeytown/Kathleen Edwards would almost certainly find it well worth the investment.

Every song a winner - great production
I visted Austin, Texas in February 2005 and went to a place called Cheapo Records. I took a chance on buying a couple of CDs by local bands and 45 South was one. What a record!
Every single song is brilliant. The playing and production is blissful. When I got back I e-mailed Ray O'Hara to let him know how much I enjoyed the CD and to ask when the next one will be out. Sadly, Ray is unable to get into the studio at the moment but I wait in eager anticipation.
Nice one, Ray!

With Ray O’Hara a new name appears on the horizon. Despite time spent in the Orange Hunters with three CDs brought to market, it is with this solo debut that I think he can realise breakthrough success... with this strong performance he is new hope in the roots world. -- Braeken Francois

He's Done it AGAIN!
Ray O'Hara's departure from his former Chicago-based band, the Orange Hunters, and decision to take the risk and explore, share and set free the well-kept secret of his incredible range and versatility is long overdue. No longer limiting his recordings to classic rock while privately exploring and arranging his heartfelt compositions in true rockabilly form and a range of formats including the particularly unique style I can only describe as a raw, modern county-influenced sound. His smooth crossovers have tremendously broadened his following and consistently prove he possesses a rare, innate gift. I am among the lucky few who were fortunate enough to have observed his tremendous growth since the early days of 1986. I wish him well in his career and know he appreciates every person to which his music has meaning. Every word truly does have meaning. That is his most valuable gift.

I bought this because of the sampler of music that came w/ my new Dell laptop; the cuts were great but I had to buy the CD to hear them all the way through. And I'm glad I did.
This guy is a tremendous writer and singer. "45 south" & "On my Mind" are my favorites and I hope I can catch him on the road some day.

Great songs
First heard it on my Dell and I'm glad I did. Great songs that remind me of Micky C's Crisis. Rock and pop songs for grown ups who like to think about their music.
