Album Notes
Flutist Rebecca Kleinmann presents new original music by Brazilian composer friends Ian Faquini, Douglas Lora, Lucas Telles, Marcos Ruffato, Almir Côrtes and the legendary Hermeto Pascoal alongside a Brazilian standard by Sivuca and Oswaldinho do Acordeon. Drawing from influences of Jazz and diverse Brazilian styles including Baião, Valsa and Choro, "Intuição Verdadeira" (True Intuition), was recorded in live sessions by Rebecca and sixteen other master musicians from Brazil and the United States. Beautifully recorded in six studios from Belo Hortizonte, Brazil to the famous Fantasy Studios in Berkeley, California, it flows as a work of art, moving seamlessly from heartfelt ballads to lively pieces with layers of syncopated rhythm.

Rebecca's rich, expressive tone and agile technique shine throughout the album including several performances on alto flute (Flauta em Sol), soaring flute features and a joyful piccolo theme. Although Kleinmann herself is also an exceptional singer, she choose to highlight the expressive vocals of Ian Faquini on "Lenga Lenga." Followed by a gorgeous introduction, Faquini's tantalizing song flows naturally between meters of 5 and 11 with playful Portuguese lyrics by Rogerio Santos. The track is supported by the trombone prowess of Natalie Cressman (Trey Anastasio band) blending beautifully with Rebecca's alto flute. (Rebecca, Ian and Natalie tour as "Brasiliense Trio.")

Several musicians featured on "Intuição Verdadeira" hail from Belo Horizonte, Brazil. From Rebecca's journal: "I have become fascinated with Belo Horizonte and am discovering with joy the ridiculous level of musical talent thriving there. The natural beauty and waterfalls of the area are awe inspiring." Belo Horizonte pandeiro master Túlio Araújo is featured on four tracks: two pieces by Marcos Ruffato recorded in Belo Horizonte and two tunes recorded at Fantasy Studios while Túlio was on tour in California with an amazing BH based quartet. "I am grateful for such strong musical connections and friendships and am looking forward to returning."

Uniquely featured on this album are three tunes written for Rebecca by Brazilian living legend Hermeto Pascoal. Multi-instrumentalist and creative genius Pascoal is known for his "O Groupo" which fathered the careers of masters Airto Moreira, Carlos Malta, Itiberê Zwarg and Jovino Santos Neto, among others, as well as musical contributions to Miles Davis' albums. "Intuição Verdadeira é Assim" ("True Intuition is Like That"), the album title inspiration, was written by Pascoal in Curitiba when Rebecca visited in 2010. "Rebeca Bennvinda a Nossa Casa" ("Rebecca welcome to our house") also written at this time will be released in 2019. "Intuição Verdadeira é Assim" was recorded in 2011 by Rebecca and Latin Grammy nominated pianist/ arranger/ composer Jovino Santos Neto who plays a beautiful fluid piano solo on the track. Also on the album are two Hermeto tunes written for Rebecca in 2017. "Volta, Volta Sem Parar" ("Return, Return without End") was written on the back of a placemat at Mel's diner in San Francisco before Hermeto and band, with Rebecca as a special guest, performed at the SF Jazz Center. Jovino and Rebecca recorded it in Seattle later that year. "Se For Descer Tá Bom" ("If I were to go Downstairs it is Fine") was written on Rebecca's kitchen wall in Oakland, California on a particularly hot summer day after the master taught at California Brazil Camp. This tune was recorded with Vitor Gonçalves, outstanding accordionist who continues the lineage of Hermeto's legacy.
