ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
The making of “Bird’s Eye View” has definitely been the most fun I’ve had recording an album. Finally gaining the flexibility in recording to do some of these songs has been immensely exciting, and I hope you enjoy listening to it as much as I have enjoyed putting these songs together.

Each of these songs is a piece of my life: all of them are true, but not all of them are about me. The metal flavor of “Battle of the Alphas” is a style I’ve been chasing for a while, but the song itself was commissioned by a close friend. Similarly, I know that “Easy Way Out” is outside of my musical comfort zone (I just don’t have the voice for it); but it had to be written, as a plea to real people in real trouble.

It was also interesting to me how the songs changed as I recorded them. Some (like “Ghosts”) I felt were just ‘filler’ songs for the album, but turned out to be my favorites. Others (like “Easy Way Out”) could quite capture the potential I felt they had. As I grow in the future, perhaps I’ll revisit these as I have done with others.

Themes of love, hope, disappointment, and broken dreams affect all of our lives, and much of this album reflects these from my own life. It is my hope that despite all the flaws of my music, the core of what I sing is imparted to you in a way that resonates with you. Below, I’ve included the lyrics from each song – just in case you care to sing along.

"Dizzy For You"
I think we know where this is going
But there are some things you should know
I am hesitant to let my heart be open
So I’m gonna take it slow

My long history of self inflicted heartache
And oversized mistakes has left me skeptical
But these conversations so long overdue
That sparks between us two returns my joy to full

You’ve got me spinning round and round – got me dizzy for you
You’ve got me ten feet off the ground – and I’m dizzy for you
You take me up, up, and away – got me dizzy for you
You take me farther every day – and I’m so dizzy for you

It seems to me that I don’t know enough about you
But I sure would like to learn
And though my hearts too scared to jump right in and trust you
How else will I learn

My long history of ignoring God’s commands
And the movements of His hands has left me in the dark
And so I pray whatever goes from me to you
And anything that ensues brings pleasure to His heart

You’ve got me spinning round and round – got me dizzy for you
You’ve got me ten feet off the ground – and I’m dizzy for you
You take me up, up, and away – got me dizzy for you
You take me farther every day – and I’m so dizzy for you

"Battle of the Alphas"
The hunger of two wolves within your soul
Brother fighting brother for control
The Alpha rises up to rule your flesh from his own heart
Their passions not the same, one of light and one of dark

The strength of each wolf relies on you
Their appetite is sated by what you do
Made stronger by this food of choice, either answers to your voice
The wolf that wins is the one you feed, so watch where you throw your bones

With two to feed and food for one the battle of the alphas has begun
And nothing less than a fight to death will the battle of the alphas be won

Their fight continues on throughout your life
Bloodstains cover fur of dark and light
Evil appears the stronger and your hope may disappear
Still the struggle is not over, good can always conquer fear

With two to feed and food for one the battle of the alphas has begun
And nothing less than a fight to death will the battle of the alphas be won

Advice for feeding the Alpha that is right
Avoid other temptations, seek the Light
Seek no glory of your own but to reflect the brightness shown
Be wary of the darkness without creating the light alone

With two to feed and food for one the battle of the alphas has begun
And nothing less than a fight to death will the battle of the alphas be won

"Bird’s Eye View"
Clouds lay thick around my eyes
as I drift between the worlds where darkness covers light
Dividing heaven from some hell
inky oceans drown our efforts like captured rodents in a well
Feeble pinpricks shining forth
like stars upon the firmament is all we can afford

From my bird’s eye view
The tide is slowly creeping higher
Washing all to faded dunes

From my bird’s eye view
Our anthills built in arrogance
Cannot perceive our doom

Headlights dance between the stars
as a river flowing or a serpent sliding slowly in the dark
We’ve come so far yet still don’t see
the would we’ve made and roads we’ve paved will drown in blackened seas
The borders that we aim to claim
recede with every sunset and they do not grow again

From my bird’s eye view
The surge is swiftly sweeping higher
Yet we live without a clue

From my bird’s eye view
The vastness of our empires
Seems as nothing to our doom

"Easy Way Out"
Do you hear me, when I call your name out loud
Do you trust me, because I’ve been where you are now
Please don’t be afraid, and don’t turn away
Just hear me out
All I have to say, is this is not okay
Because there is no easy way out

Do you see me, I’m here with open arms
Can you stand up, and take a step out of the dark
Please ignore these lies, and don’t try to hide
Don’t tune me out
It’s alright to cry, and to wonder why
That there is no easy way out

Don’t let go of this life you seek to end
Don’t lose hope because your joy can come back again
Don’t you know, that the pain of what you do
Is so much more than now, so much more than you

Have you heard me, can I take it from your hand
Please don’t stay here, please turn back from this end
And I beg you stay, please don’t go this way
Don’t shout me out
There is no escape worth the price you pay
Because there is no easy way out

"The Bridge Named Iscariot"
I was stranded on an island, helpless and alone
Yet on the dim horizon, the mainland known as Hope
And in my dreams I’d go there, full of wonders never known

I looked towards the sky and the waters all around
Wrote messages in bottles, yet still was never found
Eventually I realized escape was on this ground

So I built a bridge named Iscariot
And loaded up my hopes to carry it
And then I could leave, never looking back

And so my work began to build this bridge anew
It leapt forth from the shoreline as an arrow straight and true
Each day my hopes grew stronger, but its end I never knew

The waves beneath my feet, and the wind blew in my face
I set out for the horizon, slow and steady was my pace
Finally completed, I could not guess my fate

And as I crossed the bridge named Iscariot
With all my hopes and dreams, I tried to carry it
Again another step, I turned and looked back

As the wind began to howl, and the rain began to pour
The bridge splintered violently and I sprinted for the shore
The storm raged on, my work undone, yet almost to my goal
And suddenly it’s all ablaze, a torment to my soul

And so I burned the bridge named Iscariot
By loading up my guilt and trying to carry it
Now as I float adrift I can’t help looking back

"The Highway"
Rain beats the windshield as the wipers swipe in time
No one’s voice around me, except the radio and mine
This two lane country road sliding underneath my wheels
Shaded by the oaks on these good ol’ red clay hills

Racing trains and chasing rain
Long drives to pass the time
An open road to free my soul
That highway breeze puts me at ease

If the sun’s on the horizon or the moon’s my only light
If thunder comes a-rolling or the skies are blue and bright
Any day’s a good day to cruise behind the wheel
Soothing comes included in these good ol’ fashioned gears

Racing trains and chasing rain
Long drives to pass the time
An open road to free my soul
That highway breeze puts me at ease

"Ghosts (In the Crowd)"
As I walk within this city, surrounded by these faces
I pass them by and know that I’m alone
Each one a different beauty, complete and wholly precious
And mine feels as a monster carved of stone

Yet it’s you I hear, whispering from shadows
I still can’t clear my head of you
And I still fear of hurting from this battle
To find you here

If I saw you in a crowd, I’d turn and walk away
If you called my name out loud, I’d find any excuse not to stay
Because you don’t know me now, I guess you didn’t know me then
And here I still resent you in the end

As I walk within my memory, surrounded by your presence
I know my life and see where I was wrong
Your words linger and haunt me, devoid of understanding
And I call out responses too long gone

Each time I try forgiving you my sorrow
The hatred flies back again
And I tell the lie that I’ve healed all these scars
I find you here

If I saw you in a crowd, I’d turn and walk away
If you called my name out loud, I’d find any excuse not to stay
Because you don’t know me now, I guess you didn’t know me then
And there’s no way in hell we’d still be friends

Each time I try forgiving you my sorrow
The hatred flies back again
And I tell the lie that I’ve healed all these scars
I find you here

"Sweet Summertime"
I remember you in the summer of ‘09
Dancing in the sunlight, how your hair did shine
I was your fool, you know I can’t lie
I was trying anything to make you mine

Calling you up when it was way too late
Remember holding hands on that walk around the lake
I shared all my secrets, which sealed my fate
I was so afraid that it was a big mistake

But there’s no better way to spend time
Then trying to get you to bite on my lines
In the sweet summertime

And then it came, our very first kiss
You trembled so bad that we nearly missed
And you still say now when we reminisce
That out of them all, it was the very best

So I’m lying awake, lit by starlight
Thinking about that very same night
In the sweet summertime

Now years have passed, you wear my ring
You still don’t like it when I try to sing
As much as I love those memories
I love you more than anything

There’s no better way to live life
Than to live it with you here by my side
In the sweet summertime

"Anna Marie"
I turn my face into the wind, and brave the waves on my own again
I’m shifting steady on my feet, but still I’m miles and miles away from where I want to be

I turn my face up to the clouds, charged by the stars to seek you out
But dull foreboding fills my bones, they ache in protest, not as young as they were a day ago

And so I sail out to sea
Searching shore to shore
For my Anna Marie

My face now hardened to the wind, it seems I’ve lost myself in stars again
My hands are numb upon the bow, I’m wishing Lady Luck would share her secrets with me now

No rest tonight for my bones, no matter how deep I sleep they aren’t at home
Elusive visions tease my ever-weary mind of golden sunlight, golden hair, and a golden girl by my side

And so I drift out at sea
Trekking endless waves
For my Anna Marie

And so I sail out to sea
Searching shore to shore
For my Anna Marie

"Every Day"
The space between each finger, is empty without your hand
And your presence with me lingers, in ways no other can

It seems my arms cry out, just to hold you close
In ways words can’t pronounce, beyond verse or prose

Because I need you here
I’m asking you to stay
What I feel is so clear
It grows stronger every day

You have wormed your way within, every corner of my mind
Every day that I live without you is wasted time

As I grope within the hollow, that is left by you
I know the footsteps I should follow will lead me in the Truth

Because I need you here
I’m asking you to stay
What I feel is so clear
It grows stronger every day

Because I need you here
I’m begging you to stay
What I feel is so clearly good
It grows stronger every day
