Album Notes

"The new generation of New Zealand jazz musicians has moved up several notches if the confident energy and conceptual awareness shown on this debut CD by Reuben Bradley's band is anything to go by." Mike Nock

After arriving in New York during the freezing winter blizzards of 2007, Reuben Bradley, armed with drum sticks and grim determination, tracked down master drummer Barry Altschul and undertook a series of lessons that would change his musical landscape forever. On his return to New Zealand 6 months later, Reuben set about composing material for his next album, ‘Resonator’.

Reuben’s musical creativity for the last 10 years has been focused on the role of being a side man for a multitude of fantastic musicians & band leaders. After playing a supporting role and seeing how other musicians perceive jazz music for so long, he began to develop a desire to do things his own way. After realising that no body else is taking jazz in New Zealand in the directions he personally hears, and after extensive international travels, Reuben realised he would have to try and develop this direction himself.
As rhythm is a drummers business, Reuben set about writing songs based around what he knows well; the basic germ of each song is a strong central rhythm, albeit a bass line, melody line of percussion part. Each rhythmic idea was based on a particular feeling, a challenging rhythmic concept or a desire to compose for rhythmic structures not commonly used in jazz music.

With a basic line up of Saxophone, Piano, Double-Bass & Drum kit, this album begins by embracing the ‘classic 60’s’ Jazz sound. Modal Improvisations, hemiola rhythm & raw swingin’ energy delve into an eclectic mix of percussion, vocals, synthesizers, samplers, studio techniques, angular time signatures and contemporary rhythmic structures.
The nature of the ‘jazz’ of this album pays tribute to the established American Jazz traditions, yet its openness and experimental conceptualizations are more at home in the European jazz direction.
The aim was to make a uniquely ‘New Zealand’ sounding album. However, the result is a sonic landscape that is more at home at an international level whilst referencing New Zealand’s true spirit of ‘do-it-yourself-mate’ determination. The music is ‘glocal’ in that respect; it takes from both local traditions and mixes it freely with musical styles from around the globe.
