Karina Wilson (violin, Santa Fe, NM)
Terry Wergeland (piano, accordion, flugelhorn, Lynnwood, WA)

Reverie’s first CD, Violet: Improvisational Fantasies and Meditations on English Country Dance Tunes and Original Compositions is a stylistic synthesis ranging from classical chamber music to folk, jazz, “new age” and contemporary free improvisation.

This project came about when the three of us found ourselves together in a spontaneous jam session that turned into sheer magic in the wee hours of an epic party. Entranced by what we’d experienced and hearing the same from the few listeners there, we took Reverie into the studio in July 2014, and Violet is what happened.

We work in diverse genres, and our connection is through playing for Contra Dance and English Country Dance. While many of the tracks are sourced in dance tunes - seven English Country Dances, two original waltzes by Marni (All the Birds in Ballard, Violet) and one by Karina (Celeste) - these meditative and jazzy interpretations were not intended to be danceable. It’s perfectly ok to dance if you feel moved, just know that this is a listening CD.

Listeners have felt deeply touched by the music on Violet, sharing that it is uplifting, inspiring, and helps them concentrate on creative work. It can be almost trance-inducing at times and soaring at others. Those familiar with English Dance will be intrigued by these meditative interpretations, and if this genre is new to you, it will open a door of discovery into the tremendously beautiful ECD repertoire and perhaps inspire you check out a dance.
