ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
I started the Revival Trio project in April, 2012 from a desire to play some African-influenced improv music (a’la Abdullah Ibrahim, Ali and Vieux Farka Toure, Boubacar Traore and a few others) and also because of a new, weekly gig opportunity in Sacramento. It seemed like a good idea to match Vanessa Cruz, who combines that rhythmic feel with the power of Elvin Jones, with Shawn Hale. Shawn and I have been musical partners for several years and he’s the perfect guy for such a project. He simply lays it down. Solid.

We played Fridays at the PreFlite Lounge, a small and understated bar underneath the mall downtown. It was a great time for the group as we could familiarize ourselves with this new music, play regularly and get paid for doing so. The project quickly became a force, as there was a great combination of a steady and fierce rhythm with a heavy sense of “let it fly” improvisations. I simply loved this project.

The Revival Trio lasted until October of 2012, and has gone on hiatus due to Vanessa’s move to New York (go Vanessa!). I didn’t feel like one person could be replaced by another, so as she leaves it’s time for the next thing. It may be a funny thing to release a record at a time when the band goes on hiatus, but I enjoyed this project tremendously and wanted to have a document of our time together.

These discs are made DIY-style, with recycled Trader Joe’s bags serving as the disc covers. I hope you enjoy listening to this crew as much as I enjoyed playing with them.

Onward,
RH
