"This is a tour de force in the art of the duo. Empathy between Ms. Reynolds and bassist Hans Sturm is striking. Sturm's arco technique and bowing on Blue Got Up and Patterns, for example, owes much to the stylings of Charles Mingus, while absorbing the use of space as practiced by Izenson and Haden. Reynolds often employs a sparse piano style as on Shadows of Invisible Trees with Tatumesque runs and a string melodic left hand not unlike Bud Powell's. She is an extremely melodic and evocative pianist, as displayed on the composition Who Knows When the Silence Begin. The compositions are a delight in their originality and spatial feeling.
To make duo recording successful requires more than skillful players and inventive melodies. Reynolds and Sturm find that groove, a symbiosis from the start and it is that bond which makes Blue Got Up an extremely rewarding listen.

Blue Got Up is based on a poem from the book Sounds by Wassily Kandinsky.

Shadows of Invisible Trees, written for a performance with the Synergy Dance Company, was inspired by Duke Ellington.

The Garden Behind Glass Walls comes from the Haiku:
Slender wild flowers
dance in the glass walled garden
where she hides her heart.

Patterns is an expression of the cyclical rhythms in nature.

Nicaragua: Songs in a Garden was named for a short story by Anais Nin: "The song slipped into the garden quietly.. The child could cry, not at a song, but with a premonition of things worth weeping for...."

Quasimodal was inspired by and written for Roscoe Mitchell's soprano saxophone.

Cruel Contradiction was also written for Synergy.

O-Zone was inspired by Ornette Coleman and Georgia O'Keeffe.

Who Knows When Silence Begins? just played itself one day.

Jane Reynolds is a jazz pianist and composer in the Madison area who has collaborated extensively with vocalist Lynette Margulies and guitarist Roger Brotherhood. Since 1985 she has also produced the weekly jazz radio program "Jazz Sounds" on WORT-FM. Jane has taught keyboard improvisation at various music clinics, music theory at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and currently teaches piano, jazz improvisation, and theory in her private studio. She completed a comparitive study of the improvisational music of Albert Ayler, Roscoe Mitchell, and Cecil Taylor for her Ph.D., under the direction of Joan Wildman.

Double bassist Hans Sturm has performed as soloist, chamber, orchestral, jazz and
improvisational musician throughout Europe, China, Japan, Brazil, and the United States. Sturm received his doctorate from Northwestern University and is currently an Associate Professor and Chair of the String Department at Ball State University. Sturm has appeared with many artists across the spectrum of jazz music including Eddie Daniels, Phil Woods, Randy Brecker, Roscoe Mitchell, and others. A frequent performer of new music,Sturm has toured with 'Fireflight' (soprano, Japanese koto and bass koto, double bass, and
percussion) and 'Trinkle, Burkett, and Sturm' (trumpet, marimba and double bass) for more than fifteen years. As an orchestral bassist, he has served as principal bassist of several regional orchestras and toured Europe as a member of the American Sinfonietta.
