Contrary Cocktail

by Richard Bennett

Contrary Cocktail. In equal measure combine: shining guitars, silvery steels, shimmering strings, meaty beats, breezy beats, a pinch of pop, a jigger of jazz, essence of country, with a twist of tone and lashings of echo. Shake it up baby. Serves 12

How a start a great guitar album? With some trumpet of course! How to bring a smile on everyone’s face? Add a ukulele to the broth!
Contrary cocktail is Richard’s 5th solo opus. Richard knows how to surprise the listener’s ears (choice of instrument to support the melody, major to minor switch). Jazz is there, Cuba is close, old TV series are back, swing is omnipresent, taste and feelings are everywhere!
This album is a beautiful blend of fun moments. A very nice cocktail! Cheers to the maestro!

Richard Bennette
Love all his songs, awesome, he is such a good guitar player! My brother started playing on a gibson at 7 years old, ended up in his group and lost him 6 years ago of Cancer, it was terrible, he was so good.

Excellent ......
having Richards other releases, my player has no other content but the 5 CD'd from RB along with a few with RB playing alongside MK. Being housebound i have a lot of time and at this period of time , my room is darkened and the music is allowed to just "wash " over me and all i can say is... "I AM HAPPY" Followed MK with Richard alongside for many years now, and I know its an old adage but its true, "Better by Age".. I want to say thanks for many happy years of listening to MASTERS of their chosen trade, which gives pleasure to thousands..... !! I look forward to many more "HAPPY " hours of listening to music that will not grow old nor will it fade away ! A very old fan (Both in years (76) and continuity).....

album from a master musician
If you want to hear quality notes instead of many quantity notes,
if you want to hear music made and played with passion and love,
if you want to hear tunes played with integrity and not commercial,
if you want to hear music played with sense,
if you want to hear a cocktail of contrary music,
you are with the right musician here

I'm definitely stirred
The late Ian Fleming famously “invented” a very specific cocktail for a certain Mr. Bond, whose martini was compelled to consist of “Three measures of Gordon’s, one of vodka, half a measure of Kina Lillet, shaken (not stirred) over ice, and garnished with a thin slice of lemon peel.” That particular cocktail became famous the world over. Sadly, Richard Bennett will never be as famous, but his new CD “Contrary Cocktail” is surely as intriguing as Bond’s habitual martini.
If you are reading reviews of this CD, I’m guessing that there is a good chance that you are already familiar with the work of Richard Bennett, and need little persuasion to actually check it out, as in listen to it in its entirety. If you are new to his work however, then I’d say that Contrary Cocktail is the perfect entry point. Versatility seems like a bit of a lame noun to describe his prodigious ability to present music in a wide range of styles, but then that’s why he’s enjoyed a lengthy career as a studio musician and sideman. No apologies, I’m a fan and have been since discovering him a rather long time ago. Notwithstanding the fact that I often seek out virtuoso guitarists whose work inspires my own humble attempts at making music on the guitar, for me, this album, like the ones that came before it, is all about the songs, not the playing. The playing is wonderful –it always was and will always so with this guy. However, the songs – that’s the real test. I can’t pick a bad one on this collection, and for me that’s really quite something. They are at once intriguing and surprising, and make me glad I slipped it in the CD player. After all, isn’t music meant to make you feel better about your day? Mission accomplished Mr. Bennett.

A cocktail to suit your every mood
Once again, Richard manages to release another dozen tracks of his own, amidst working with everybody under the sun's albums (how he does it, is beyond me. Take a look at the guy's discography and prepare for a wild ride).
Richard promises a cocktail, and delivers. The pedal steel is definitely getting its time in the spotlight here, and Richard's accuracy with this instrument — for those of us unfortunate enough to play the guitar — is nothing short of astonishing.
There's romance here, a bit of jazz there, country... altogether a collection of 12 good ones to fit your every mood, performed by one of the greatest guitar players walking this miserable blue planet.
I have known Richard for a while. He lives music and breathes the guitar; that, along with his charming personality, makes him a distinguished guitar player, a wonderful artist and a great person all around. His records are constantly on my playlist; give his records a few spins and I'm sure you'll understand why.
