ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
This powerful and exciting 2-hour concert was recorded live in the Washington National Cathedral and features outstanding Trad musicians from Ireland along with orchestra, chorus, operatic soloists and pipe organ, and is narrated by Ireland’s Ambassador to the U.S. and prominent Irish Americans. Irish musicians include Muireann nic Amhlaoibh (Danú), Christy O'Leary (De Danaan, Boys of the Lough), Aimée Farrell Courtney (RTÉ Contempo Quartet), and operatic bass-baritone Derek Tipperary Ryan (Celtic Nights).
“It is important that the bonds connecting Ireland and the U.S. are constantly renewed and refreshed. Music and poetry speak to the heart and have always provided a vital expression of Irish identity. It is a great honour for me to be part of this celebration of Ireland's history in music and poetry.” Ambassador of Ireland, H.E. Daniel Mulhall.
Featured musicians also include operatic soprano Esther Heideman; operatic tenor Matthew Loyal Smith; fiddler and violinist Mitch Fanning; button accordionist Billy McComiskey; and conductor Maestro Scott Tucker.
“Ireland's Poet-Patriots is...a centenary's worth of talent in one production. For those of us who are passionate about Ireland's fierce weave of longing and desire for justice, the country's hold on a vision of independence and democracy in even the harshest times, Richard B. Evans' work of art is sublime. I felt as if all the Irish history I'd ever read, known, or thrilled to was brought back to me, almost as if in a dream. Ireland's Poet-Patriots, A Musical History, is a cultural treasure.“ Jacki Lyden, Author & Journalist, NPR Alum & Contributor.
Narrators on this recording are Ambassador of Ireland Daniel Mulhall, Chris Matthews, Patricia Harty, Susan Davis, Gov. Martin O'Malley, and Mark Tuohey.
“Richard Evans has built in music, song, and narrative, a transcendental experience… a performance that was truly captivating and left an incredible sense of joy and meaning to the evening…. It was very clear that what Richard was able to do and what the performers brought forward was something universal, something that speaks not only of the Irish narrative and Irish experience, but who we are and what we are – something that is fundamental to the human spirit.” Philip Grant, Consul General of Ireland for the Western U.S.
American composer Richard B. Evans celebrates Ireland with a concert of original classical crossover and Irish traditional tunes that vividly bring to life the words of 12 of Ireland’s great Poet-Patriots – from Aindreas Mac Craith and Donncha Rua Mac Conmara to Robert Emmet, Jeremiah O’Donovan Rossa, James Connolly, Padraic Pearse, WB Yeats, Maud Gonne and more – in a timeless musical tribute to Ireland’s heroic past and luminous future.
This moving concert premiered in San Francisco’s Grace Cathedral to a capacity audience for the 1916 Centenary commemorations and was produced and hailed again in the Washington National Cathedral in 2017.
