Pacific Bridge

by Richard Crandell & Masumi Timson

Ancient vibrations. Asia meets Africa. Oregon music. A spell-binding, cross-cultural blending of the Japanese koto, magnificently played by Masumi Timson (Pink Martini), and master mbirist, Richard Crandell. Soothing, sacred and beautiful.

ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
With a long, unsung career to his credit, RICHARD CRANDELL, Oregonian innovator of the African mbira ("The sacred instrument of Zimbabwe," he writes) reaches across the nearest ocean to build a PACIFIC BRIDGE anchored on the other side by MASUMI TIMSON (regular guest member of Portland-based "little orchestra" PINK MARTINI) on Japan's equally ancient and sacrosant koto. CRANDELL'S two albums on John Zorn's TZADIK label ("Mbira Magic" and "Spring Steel") are among the label's most cherished. The two met when TIMSON appeared as part of a koto ensemble playing a local event.

Though utterly hypnotic, PACIFIC BRIDGE is far from New Age chill music to be played while enjoying a relaxing couple's massage. The duo are not afraid to wander close to the precipice of dissonance in search of breathtaking harmonic vistas, as they range between composition and improvisation. The metal tabs and pitched strings resonating against wooden boards lull the mind into a trance with circular repetition (particularly on the two-part "Midnight in Oregon") while their bendy posey picks at the cerebrum with pinpoint intelligence. CRANDELL and TIMSON convey the complexity of philosophy with the agreeable undertone of pop-song refrain. One of the sweetest and most gratifying duets of thte year.

- Stephan Fruitman, AVANT MUSIC NEWS.

RICHARD CRANDELL is well-known for his incredible mbira recordings on TZADIK RECORDS (Spring Steel and Mbira Magic - both with ace percussionist, Cyro Baptista) as well as his earlier mbira album, "Essential Tremor" on SOUND ADVICE RECORDS and NATURE BLISS RECORDS . Richard is also internationally known as a guitarist, having released a number of popular fingerstyle solo records (In the Flower of Our Youth, One On One) and killer duet albums with Bill Bartels (Oregon Hill, High Places) and Tim Danforth (Christmas Unplugged). Richard has also written songs recorded by Leo Kottke and has appeared on numerous guitar compilation albums on TOMPKINS SQUARE RECORDS and NUMERO GROUP RECORDS.

MASUMI TIMSON is a professional koto player who has recorded and extensively toured with PINK MARTINI, as well as having released recordings under the group name, MATCHA LATTE. Masumi holds a Master Degree in koto and shamisen. Her interests extend to classical koto music as well as contemporary stylings, often in conjunction with various western instruments.
