Album Notes
“…Time to Fly”, which Byars co-produced with her daughter, hip hop/jazz artist Georgia Anne Muldrow,
is infused with a variety of compelling musical styles and influences that reflect Byars’ fearless
willingness to explore and express the many different facets of who she is, of where her life journey has
already taken her and where her path is pointing now --- there’s the silky smooth early-‘60s R&B feel of
“Honor,” the wailing guitar and hold-on-to-the-last-syllable Traveling Wilburys’-tinged “Carry On”; the
dramatic Grace Jones-inflected disco turn on Star Above II Remix and the infectious South African/Ethiopian vibe of “Freedom,
Freedom” (a song that provides the perfect soundtrack to the surging movements for progressive social
change that are currently sweeping the nation…). So many different elements could make a cd feel
disjointed, but “My Oh My It’s Time To Fly” hangs together through the soulful authenticity of Byars’
voice and the consistently uplifting message in her lyrics --- that, yes, this bad boy called Life can feel
very dark at times, can put you through a whole lotta changes, but that it’s all part of a Greater Plan to
deliver your soul to its Higher Destiny. It’s a mature statement about a hard-won faith that Good is in the
mix even when things look their messiest, not a sugar-coated (and ultimately empty) promise that things
will always flow easily and effortlessly --- a reminder that should resonate with listeners struggling
through the turbulence of either personal or political matters. Jan Zoochie

You can feel the love in every note, truly good for the soul.
This is the perfect album not only for those of us who already love her, but also for those just discovering her - you can hear everything that makes this amazing lady the truly remarkable person that she is, you can hear her influences, you can hear her wonderful message you can hear her heart and soul. This album has it all, you even have her daughter, Georgia Anne Muldrow's superb production - and there are songs that'll make you sing, songs that'll make you dance, and yes, there's even moments that might bring the tears, but even those are good for the soul! In this musically great but also very personal album Rickie has literally written her transformation and, just like an emerging butterfly. it couldn't be more beautiful.
