ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Rik has been performing as a solo artist and band member on the New York Metro area music scene since the late 80’s. A singer-songwriter, guitarist and multi-instrumentalist, founding member and chief songwriter for The Subterraneans, his passion for music always has him involved in multiple projects.

He's currently plays guitar, lap steel, mandolin, & vocals for Roots/Americana band Spuyten Duyvil and is in the process of finishing up a new album for The Subterraneans to be released on Pyrrhic Victory Recordings in the Fall of 2015.

The individual tracks for this album, his first solo release, were each recorded as solo performances with the lead vocal and acoustic guitar played live and overdubbed embellishments added later. In addition to guitars and vocals for the album, he also played mandolin, lap steel, electric piano, harmonica, and sitar. The album was recorded and produced by Juano Lippi.

"A gifted guitarist who knows his way around a hook and a melody, Rik Mercaldi takes a break from his trademark rock and roll pursuits to channel his inner singer/songwriter, on this engaging collection of mostly acoustic tunes."

Awesome
I am always looking for music that makes me feel good. From the first strum of the guitar I am hooked. Rik goes on to weave a full bodied range of eclectic instruments in with his thought provoking lyrics. It's a "sit on the deck with a glass of wine, foot tapping" compilation of awesomeness.

Something Real
There are musicians, there are songwriters, and there are players... Rik Mercaldi is all of the above and then some. His lyrics are true, his melodies are seductive, and his approach is honest and fearless. This is a collection of songs brought to you by a 'singer-songwriter' who isn't afraid to play his ass off like a real musician (even in an acoustic setting). His performance was captured instead of cut together like rock-pop-photoshop. The production enhances its form and lifts its shine. At times the production even caters to the music-geek in its collaborative nature. It's reminiscent of the greats, while maintaining it's original charm and slant.

I was surprised when I first heard this. I was used to Rik rocking out more. But, like most good albums, it gets better with repeated listening.
