Album Notes
This performance of the Sacramento-based quartet "Riverrun" (formerly called "Kairos") was recorded live at Mastroserio Winery, as part of the winery's live summer jazz series. As always, both the audience and the performers are enveloped under the umbrella of Ruggiero Mastroserio's magnificent oak tree, adjacent to peaceful rows of grape vines. The beauty of the surroundings is reflected in the music, and this recording faithfully captures the journey Riverrun and the audience shared that lovely summer evening.

Riverrun (and Kairos before it) has always been an exploratory group, and as such the music on this CD is very diverse, and wholly original. "Kathi", "Forgiveness", and "Motherland" are beautiful, textural ballads, the latter featuring bassist Paul Relvas on the kalimba. "Nathan Son" is a bossa nova with an almost Parisian flair. Some tunes border on the classical - "An American Place" and "Forgiveness". "Dragonflies and Cattails" is a lowdown Delta blues. "Benton's Path" and "Red Tree, Yellow Sky" showcase the intensity that the band is capable of building and sustaining. And in "Tuesday's Blues" they just flat out swing. The concert closes with some rock and roll, the group delivering a funky rendition of "First Son".

The members of Riverrun are Steve Lishman (saxophone), Dyne Eifertsen (trombone), Paul Relvas (6-string bass), and Scott Gordon (drums & percussion). The group does live performances and concerts in a variety of venues and settings, and has performed with dance ensembles, artists, multimedia and spoken word, and chamber orchestras. The group and its members also give clinics at schools, universities, and festivals.
