My City

by Robert Dempster

Robert Dempster was born in Detroit, MI in 1949AD (NOT B.C.) as the oldest of nine siblings. Early in his life, he realized a passion and, even better, a talent for the arts. As a self-taught artist and designer he sold his first painting at the age of 16, during which time he was a student as CassTechHigh School. He would often spend time outside of school painting buildings and signs. Dempster began his music career at the age of 17 as the lead vocalist for the rock band The Wha? The band’s success led them to become the opening act for MC5 at the Grande Ballroom in Detroit in 1966. The Wha? Broke up in 1968, but this experience only fueled his passion for singing and songwriting. In 1971, four years before the actual RenaissanceCenter was built, Robert founded The Renaissance Art Gallery in Greektown. The location, many may recognize today as the popular Greek restaurant, Pegasus. Dempster moved to Birmingham, MI in 1974 and he began creating signs, logos, brands, ads, and cable
