ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
From her journals of poetry & fragments of childhood memory, Hallett’s lyrics begin with a quest to unravel the mystery of her origins. Her search invites the listener to muse about who we think we are, where we come from and how we decide who we want to be. This 11-part song cycle moves through feelings of dislocation, otherness, discovery and possibility.

Recorded in five sound studios in Vancouver and Toronto and engineered with uncompromising skill by Jeff Wolpert, the album achieves an open compelling sound. Minden and Hallett's music evokes a curious cinematic quality with wonderfully layered arrangements using a colourful palette of acoustic sounds (blown tuned glass bottles are used extensively.) One is taken on a journey through an unexpected sonic environment interspersed with the affecting sound of musical saw and the whale-like watery calls of the waterphone that sometimes feels like a music from an imagined place. Hallett’s natural, delicate vocals are sensitive in timbre and resonance. And the songs speak with a quiet, rebellious intensity.

This is exquisite!
I am a huge fan of this duo! Why? Because their music is so unpredictable, so thoughtful and so gorgeous!
The orchestration of their eclectic assortment of instruments (mostly "found sounds" including bowls, bottles, hoses, pipes, toys) combined with the more traditional sounds of pianos, horns and voice is compositionally brilliant! They seem to have extremely high standards for quality and recording too, making the finished mix crystal clear, like a carefully balanced pyramid of shimmering glass. It feels new, yet sounds familiar... it is encouraging!
