Album Notes
Roberto and crew strap in musically for a return to the bop and post bop traditions of piano greats of the 1950's. One Night In...Volume 2 is indeed a compliment to the trio works of volume 1. The trio unit is a popular vehicle for us to release the creativity, passion and energy found in each piece of this music! For example:
The first track "Third World" wastes no time to engage the listener and features drum legend Albert "Tootie" Heath on toms, bass drum and cymbals painting musical textures the listener can hear and feel. Elisa is not left behind and adds her own fire and flurry to this track.
"Young and Foolish" is a captivating composition by Hague/Horwitt arranged beautifully by Magris that allows the listener to catch their breath and settle into the mood being created. Elisa Pruett stands out on this composition and shows her comprehension and skill of the material. Magris tickles the ivories effortlessly as a segway to Brian Steever on drums as he whisks the listener through with his amazing brush work.
"Makanda" is a catchy composition that reflects Roberto's skill as composer and arranger allowing fellow trio artists Steever and Pruett to contribute and show off their polished skills. A true master at work!
"Dianna" is like a call to all jazz listeners! Roberto's arrangement of the Ken McIntyre tune will bring the sun out even on a cloudy day. It is full of hope and aspirations. A creative piece for all creative individuals. To uplift your spirits, take a steady dose of "Dianna"!
"Mal Waldron's Dream" is more a wish than a dream. You wish this pieces would last longer with its rich chords and melody lines. Tootie Heath returns on drums for this one. Roberto add his signature piano treatments and patterns for a captivating journey. Enjoy the ride!
"Little Susan" is a seldom heard piece by Randy Weston. Brian Steever adds character to this composition and locks in a groove with Elisa as Roberto plays to compliment.
"Theme From The Odd Couple" is a composition you might not expect to hear on this project, but, Neal Hefti wrote some great compositions worthy of our consideration. Tootie Heath is back on drums with his signature sound. Roberto's respectful rendition and piano treatments are very satisfying as you remember one of televisions popular musical soundtrack.
"Burbank Turnaround" is an original composition written by Roberto Magris after his visit to beautiful downtown Burbank, California. This popular Johnny Carson destination was enough to inspire a song. Burbank is a favorite Magris destination while in California. Tootie Heath on drums is at home in this session as the master works his way around the kit. One can hear all the movie stars and actors that have graced it in this piece. It is light , bright and colorful. Tooties' brush work easily reminds one of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers dancing!
"I Can't Give You Anything But Love" by Fields/McHugh sounds like the signature end of a Broadway show or musical set that begs for an encore. Roberto allows each artist, Tootie and Elisa, to gives a round of solos with Roberto's gentle treatment in between.
"Possessed Me" is the encore bonus track. Originally recorded in Burbank, California for the "Mating Call" recording session. It includes Paul Carr, sax , Michael O'Neill on sax, Elisa Pruett, acoustic bass and the drum legend and musical stylist Idris Muhammad. It did not make the initial "Mating Call" CD release because we had so much great material on that project it would not fit on that CD. We saved it for the perfect setting. Roberto found it fitting for this showcase of sorts with three awesome drummers on one awesome CD; Albert "Tootie Heath, Brian Steever and Idris Muhammad! This project is value packed for the listener enjoyment!
The project concludes with the signature producers' "Audio Notebook"
