ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
“No Foolishness to be found here”

One of the pleasures of working on Roland Hayes: The Legacy of an American Singer, with Robert Sims was the knowledge that he would be simultaneously releasing his disc Robert Sims Sings the Spirituals of Roland Hayes. Now recognized as one of the country’s premiere interpreters of African American folksongs, Sims is at his vocal height in these Hayes-inspired arrangements. It may come as a surprised to some who read our book that the manuscript was substantially completed by the time we heard recordings of Roland Hayes’ speaking voice from interviews that were made in the 1960s. In an added bonus to Sims’ wonderful singing, he shares excerpts of Hayes’ speaking voice introducing several of the works contained on this disc. In his introduction Hayes says, “There is no foolishness or frivolity in these religious songs . . .” While there is total seriousness and pathos in Sims’ performance of “The Last Supper,” “They Led My Lord Away,” and “Mumberlin’ Word,” from The Life of Christ cycle, his interpretation of “Two Wings,” “Ezekiel Saw de Wheel,” and “Lit’l David” are full of playfulness, humor, and “an elusive spirit of radiance” as he sails through these works.

The ultimate bonus is a duet sung by Sims and Roland Hayes - through the marvels of modern technology! Hayes’ never commercially released recording of the spiritual, “Keep Me from Sinkin’ Down,” is rendered in duet form. Listeners will be enthralled by the total blending of Sims and Hayes’ voices. Surely, the master artist would have approved of this performance and, at a greater level, Robert Sims’ interpretation of his arrangements. While Robert Sims commands the stage in this repertoire, the Roland Hayes legacy will continue. Enjoy the performance.
