ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Poet, songwriter, Robin Gorn, is releasing her first commercial EP as a preview for her upcoming, full length album. Wild, ripe and true with a heaping spoonful of saudade ( a Brazilian word for happy, sad, passionate longing); these five songs are five worlds in a cinematic universe that moves sinuously through roots and world music from RnB to Brazilian rhythms to Blue Grass. A formidable songwriter, her first commercial release brings an old school musical vibe that transports you to a time and place.

Going deeper to find the light.
Robin is an independent artist living in Montreal, Quebec. Her powerful poetry is honestly delivered by an enchanting voice. At once nuanced and textured, she is capable of knocking you over with her full throated intensity.

Robin is rooted in the vibrant arts melting pot of Montreal. She has shared her creative energy in collaborations with artists from home and around the world in music, dance, poetry, art, film and TV. In Bahia, Brazil, she performed with some of the most celebrated musicians of that region. She also performs in poetry festivals. Robin has a special connection to the experimental women's choir Choeur Maha, with whom she has collaborated for more than a decade.

THE EP

Her songs go deep beneath the surface to embrace the joyous and painful inconsistencies that transform our lives. What is exquisite about this album is what is not there. This innovative production creates spaces for us to experience the music.

"Beaujelais" her bluegrass tune, swings with Annabelle Chvostek's mandolin jangly snapping the beat instead of a traditional rhythm section. Drica Souza is playing traditional instruments from Pernambuco Brazil in Robin's spoken word anthem "Love Shakin' the Fences" along with playing a plastic bag, clogging and doing vocal percussion. The tune also includes Jay Atwill twanging on the Jew's Harp. Thom Gossage's laid back drumming and little rhythmic creatures inhabit the spiritual journey of "Noah's Arms" along with Jay's mystical Lap Steel taking us somewhere between the deep south and India. "Til we try" is Robin's nod to the Philadelphia Sweet Soul Sound featuring Paul Shhrofel's sweet and funky vintage Wurlitzer, Clav, and Hammond keyboards. It is bittersweet, with rainscapes and seascapes evoking love gone wrong and rays of hope for the future. Also in the 70's style, the pop ballad "Who's Watching Over You" explores the unholy promises we make to survive.

THE RECORDING

"In Jay Atwill, I found a producer who could go deep into the songs. Jay brings an incredible musical palette that can accompany the diverse range of styles that I write in. We spent a long time envisioning the sonic landscapes where my songs would live. The musicians intuitively inhabited those spaces when they came to the sessions. The songs came alive as if they were people who could get up and walk out the door."
