Album Notes
With Industry critics and concert and radio listening audiences cheering this debut release, this album is loaded with songs that display elements of hiphop, dance, pop, and soul, along with displays of human emotion from reflection to confusion, to rejoicing in relationships to anger, sentimentality, strength and resolve. The title track , What's Up? It's Me, is a metaphor as if the artist can communicate with his late father. The verses are his father speaking to him from Heaven and the choruses are a back and forth between the two. The instrumentation of the song borrows from the less is more style of hiphop. The choruses are carried by rich textures of harmonized background vocals. "I Love My Music", is an almost blues/James Brownesc musical defiance to those who wanted Rod to sing and write the way that they wanted him to. "What The Hell Do You Mean?", is the story of a marriage gone bad. This track also features the expert guitar work of celebrated musician Willie Brown Jr. "Carolina In My Mind", penned by James Taylor is a sentimental and gentle yet soulful performance of this pop music classic. It's simple and organic orchestration features understated drumming and bass playing by Rod Clemmons along with sensitive sparse yet rich piano playing also by Clemmons. The vocal harmonies pull at your heart strings. Willie Brown Jr also lends tasteful guitar work to this spacious track. Other tracks of note include, Amen, Unbelievable Love and the soon to be Mother's Day Anthem, She's My Girl. This album is a must have for any CD collection or download.
