Rolando Semedo Bio:
Born on October 19, 1970, in the city of Praia, Cape Verde, bassist, guitarist and composer Rolando Semedo began his foray into the world of music on the saxophone, with the Band Of the Students of Granja de São Filipe. At the age of 13 he participated and advanced to the finals of the Festival Whole Child Sing. Shortly after, he chose to learn to play guitar and bass, and was part of the initial formation of the Djassy Band. At the age of 18, Rolando immigrated to Lisbon, Portugal, where he began his musical career alongside celebrated Cape Verdean legends including Bana, Tito Paris, Celina Pereira, Bius, Boy G Mendes and Nancy Vieira. Outside the Cape Verdean music world he worked with Sexteto Habanero - Cuba; Manecas Costa - Guinea Bissau; Filipe Mukenga - Angola; Paulo Flores - Angola, Eduardo Paim - Angola, Ana Lains, João Afonso, and Luiz Caracol - Portugal. Between 1993 and 1995 Rolando was part of the resident band of Lisbon’s primary club for Cape Verdean and Angolan music, B'leza, and later enlivened the nights of the equally recognized Lisbon supperclub Casa da Morna. At the end of the 90's Rolando began to explore his creativity through composition, producing and composing songs for Catarina Santos, Tchicau and Nancy Vieira. He also developed a musical partnership with fado singer Marco Rodrigues on the theme “From Chiado to Bairro Alto." As a producer he participated in the recent work of Dino D'Santiago, and has produced and/or recorded with Sarah Tavares, Maria Alice, Catarina Santos, Tchicau, Lura, Nancy Vieira, Eduardo Paim, Paulo Flores, among others. Rolando recently released his first solo album, Agu, a collection of 12 original songs performed in Cape Verdean Kriol, and a unique twist on Cape Verdean musical heritage by virtue of the fact that he performs purely in a voice & guitar format.
