ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
BEST OF THE L.A. JAZZ ENSEMBLE (65:56) FEATURING: Manolo Badrena, Mike Carnahan, Jim Coile, John Darst, Clare Fischer, Abe Laboriel, Bennie Maupin, Ralph Rickert, Patrice Rushen, Chuck Wike, Ken Wild, & Larry Williams.
Originally recorded in 1977 at Conway Studios, L.A. by Peter Chaikin. This CD contains re-mixed and re-mastered material - some of which was previously un-released. AKA 'Urban Ensemble' (see Arista/GRP5002), the original Roland Vazquez Band was recognized as a landmark jazz fusion ensemble in and around L.A. during the late '70s- featuring the leaders original 'funky salsa be-bop' music for 3+ horn and 5 rhythm players.
-------
"... an essential document, not to mention some of the most exciting, ahead-of-its-time big horn jazz ever recorded... This 'urban ensemble' formed in the mid-'70s, drew upon the finest musical talents of Southern California to create a unique soundtrack for Los Angeles - a living, forward-moving pulsebeat integrating multi-cultural textures... a must-have for any collection." (H. Grey/JazzTimes, June '94)
-------
“… a who’s who of the Los Angeles Latin and jazz colonies … these sessions sound very contemporary … Vazquez is an especially creative writer and arranger, and his work always captures and maintains a high level of melodic interest and structural variety… a time capsule effort that underscores the basic qualities which insure the perpetual validity of the genre.” (Mark Holston, Jazziz ’93)
