Album Notes
--Chan Poling, Emmy award-winning composer: "I have arranged and played many styles of music over the years. Roma's music has touched me always. Her new collection of songs for her story, A Song In My Heart, are once again beautiful and lushly romantic, evocative of another time and place." (2011) - “ I know you will enjoy Roma’s unique voice(s) both her singing one and the one inside that conjures these elegant melodies.”

--La Ritmo.com: "Roma." Her name sounds like her music - classic, filmic, (Fellini, anyone?) and like the city, it is different and beautiful. And when you listen to this collection of wonderful music that is just how you will feel - beautiful and different. When one listens to Roma, you can almost feel that you have known her for a lifetime. Her artistry and warm personality are reflected in every song that she performs.”

-- B. Cormier & G. Reitz, The Musicians Trade Journal: Coming out of the Twin Cities area, Minnesota's singer/songwriter Roma Calatayud has gathered the talents of outstanding musicians, to create a monumental collection of original selections with Latin, Jazz, and Mediterranean influence. From the infectious rhythm of "Carnival of Life", Calatayud tantalizes us with her voice, drawing us in, yet not to close, as we stand outside her magic. The Show-stopping "Enchanting Lover" is both lyrical and hypnotic. Her sound is unique, but strangely familiar, like a watercolor cityscape on a sunny day.”

--Music Dish: The tango with the violin is called 'Enchanting Lover', a romantic dance piece with a shaker in the background, and accordion coming in again (in your right ear this time). 'enchanting lover / you cast your spells from afar / and in a moment / I feel you there with me'. Next up, is the beautiful instrumental 'Sunset in Venice', with a sad violin in front, piano backing it up. Roma wrote all these songs herself, so applaud, people. Very, very good tunes.”

--Indie Music.com” Minnesota's twin cities have spawned music before that confounded the public's stereotypes of the Land of Lakes, but I doubt more so than in the case of Roma Calatayud. Her atmospheric blend of Latin American and Mediterranean musics must be intended to melt the prairie snows and ready the soil for basil, cilantro and habanero peppers. Her strong suit is clearly musical composition. Memorable hooks evoke Brazilian, Caribbean and European flavors with ease and fluidity. It really is remarkable that she came up with all the chord changes and melodies that her accompanists flesh out so expertly. The interplay between Dean Magraw's various guitars on "Magical Night" is first-rate. The rest notes and corresponding musical phrases in "God Lives" fall in interesting places. On balance, she's way ahead in the game of indie music.”

--St. Paul Pioneer Press, Jim Walsh: “Calatayud has fashioned a beautiful collection of songs and instrumentals. Calatayud’s lyrics suggest an urban Gypsy tripping the moonlight fantastic.”

Reviews of A Song In My Heart, The Novel: (2011)

--Jim Barnes, Editor, www.IndependentPublisher.com: "Reading this book will put a song in your heart, and take you back to a time when classical music was the pinnacle of popular culture and entertainment. A talented composer herself, author Calatayud-Stocks shares her knowledge and passion for art and music with this compelling historical novel and accompanying original soundtrack CD. How refreshing this is-longing for a world of fine art and music with substance? A Song in My Heart is a great place to start."

--Book Reviewer List -"An Extraordinary Fusion of Music and Literature - Through her novel, Calatayud-Stocks establishes herself as a first-rate storyteller, showcasing her equal talents for both writing and music through the story of Alejandra Stanford. The theme of music is interwoven throughout the storyline; and Calatayud-Stocks deftly interweaves the themes of music, art, romance, passion, and history. The novel is absolutely spellbinding, transporting readers to another time and place with its words and accompanying musical journey, whisking them into the realm of the extraordinary."

--KirKus Reviews: "Calatayud-Stocks’ debut is a historical novel set to music. Alejandra Stanford, an upper-class woman with progressive ideals. Her life is privileged and pluralistic, with music as the glue that holds her disparate worlds together. Alejandra dreams of becoming a conductor, though few women have preceded her there. Well-written, this is an ambitious debut. The historical aspect is well-researched and true to the period. The story is compelling that this novel deserves to find a larger audience. The novel’s grand ambitions are evident in its packaging—it is both book and musical composition (CD included). The author intends this to be the first in a trilogy, and she has created enough momentum to build on. An auspicious debut."

--5 Star Review by Heartland Reviews: "If you enjoy American and world history and culture, especially of the arts such as music and paintings and their interplay with cultural developments, you will love this book. Ms. Calatayud-Stocks' writing style is a "You Are There" approach. The author's unique approach to telling this story is demonstrated by her composing and recording music that exemplifies the moods of different story segments as they unfold. A note about her music (Did I just say that?) unlike so many music composition majors who have been taught that only musical weirdness should be used, her pieces are artfully pleasant. They exemplify the story points in ways that make sense, and yet they provide musical surprises at times with unexpected chord changes and melodic directions the listener doesn’t hear coming and yet make perfectly good sense once the new direction flowers. Ms Stocks’ music is a joy to experience. I found myself playing her accompanying CD while I read her entertaining book. In all, this was a highly unusual and well-done project that marries the written word with the musical words. We rated it five hearts.”
