ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
In 1986 I was thrilled to play in a 12-piece band led by Joe Haider and Mel Lewis. In the course of one tour I asked Mel whether he would play with my sextet on the occasion of my 30th birthday, in January of 1987. To finally work together in a small ensemble was an absolute gas! Benny Bailey and Joe Gallardo couldn't make the last gig in Vienna, so we played in quartet. Mel was, of course, also a great small group player, although more well-known for his big band work. The concert was a great experience for me and was recorded by the Austrian Radio Network and the sound quality was surprisingly good. So good, in fact, that my friend and bassist, Thomas Stabenow, who just had started his jazz label „Bassic Sound“, released the recordings on LP as „Live In Vienna“. That‘s the whole story!

I am very thankful that I had the opportunity to get to know Mel and work with him. He was a major influence on my playing and made me sound better than I ever had. Sadly, Mel left us forever early in 1990.

Please enjoy these sounds as much as we did making them. We were a couple of young Europeans being accompanied by one of the greatest jazz drummers of all time, and the music still sounds as fresh today as it did twenty-two years ago.
Roman Schwaller, Vienna, June 2009
