ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
The Chapman Stick(tm) has 12 strings and is played by two-handed tapping.
Liner notes on the album by Emmett H. Chapman ( The creator/manufacturer of the Stick) :
"The Romantic Vagabond from the outer regions has landed and he's a Stickplayer with the heart of a Gypsy. It's about time he came to earth with some real documentation of his musical art and long experience on this instrument.

Galaxy Gypsy, though mostly solo, offers a full spectrum of tapping technique and expression to the Stick enthusiast. His passionate melody is very Latinesque in flavor and is colored by many of the tactile expressive elements that I remember passing on to him in the late '70s: strong vibrations, bens, glisses, pull-offs and he uses Patch of Shades in sections to "shade" his lead expression.

And he has mastered the art of intricate bass percussion which drive the Latin rhythms and romantic chord progressions. He does it all at once of course, live with almost no overdubbing. It's the full Stick treatment, both hands independently grabbing just about as many notes as it is possible to play, interspersed with slower themes and improvs.

He is accompanied on several songs by percussionist Raymond Blahowetz whose transparant rhythmic textures compliment the Stick very nicely. Various percussive implements, drums, shakers, scrapers were tastefully used to create subtle but driving rhythms.

Ron adds some unison MIDI lines to his melody audio output as live orchestral enhancement - vibes, steeldrums, a hint of trumpet. All the dimensions of the known art of Live Stick playing seem to be present on this album - the finger dynamics of the clean string sounds, heavy legato distortion, MIDI doubling, and those incredible left hand motor rhythms.

Many thanks, Ron, for entering our sector. In your timeless (but not rhythmless) travels, I hope you'll visit us again.

All the best,
Emmett H. Chapman"
