Album Notes
From Police Officer to Saxophonist

A native of Hampton, Virginia, Ron Gilchrist grew up in a large family where love, spirituality and humor prevailed. At the age of six, he was given a set of drums and in middle school mastered the art of reading percussion music. Later, he decided that the saxophone was his first love.

After studying Music and Business Admin at Norfolk State University, he chose a law enforcement career. That led to twenty-eight years with Norfolk City’s Police Force and three more with the Sheriff’s Office. In 2013, with encouragement from friends and fellow officers to pursue music full time, Ron returned to his first love. His interests have been in smooth jazz, R&B, Gospel, Soul, and old-time Rock & Roll…and his phenomenal ability to play in any key, with minimal reliance on printed music, has placed him among the best of Hampton Roads combo musicians.

Ron has performed regularly with Rudy West & The Five Keys, The Coolin’ Out Band and Azalea. Saxophonists who have most influenced him have been Boney James, Grover Washington, Jr., and Najee.

The songs Ron chose for this, his first solo album constitute a mix of classic and recognizable contemporary pop, R&B and rock tunes which lend themselves to his Smooth Jazz treatment. He believes these songs will give listeners an opportunity to relax and enjoy real music.

Ron sends thanks to his family – particularly his wife Dee, son Paul, daughter Ashley, and grandbaby Mariah for their love and support during this endeavor. He also expresses gratitude for the encouragement of the Word Alive Christian Center and the many musicians with whom he has worked, especially Keith Nesbit – his musical “partner in crime” for almost twenty years.

For Ron, love, spirituality and humor still prevail, and his personal philosophy is to treat others the way one wishes to be treated. His warm personality speaks through the sensuous notes of the saxophone in this first album.

From Submarine Officer to Pianist

In 1960, pianist/organist Keith Nesbit joined the Royal Canadian Navy; in 1996, after a career during which his specialty was submarines, he surfaced and restarted his musical career – in Hampton Roads. His first love has always been the swinging piano styles of Erroll Garner, Nat “King” Cole and André Previn; Ron Gilchrist, whom he met in a rock band, introduced him to R&B, contemporary pop, soul and gospel. Today, the focus of his work is the recording studio. He resides in Virginia Beach with his wife, Joan. Keith’s solo albums are available at
