ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
ROOTS AND SPROUTS Albums Project started out as a way to get musicians together for camaraderie and as a way to generate funds for the Jamie Marie Sheldahl Memorial Scholarship Fund (Carlsbad High School, Carlsbad CA, U.S.A.). Once the word was out there, musicians started trickling into Brother Rock Studios (demo studios in Carlsbad and Vista, California, U.S.A.).----RICHLAND WOMAN BLUES ---- First to respond, and first on the album, was author, singer, guitarist and songwriter Steve Reid, emulating Mississippi John Hurt's syncopated finger-picking style. Hearing Steve, I knew the project would fly. First impressions, they say, last.----ROLLIN' IN MY SWEET BABY'S ARMS----Early on, Ryan Fox, multi-instrumentalist/performer and entrepreneurial music teacher, messaged me: "I'm in." When the album neared completion, I again contacted Ryan, sent the lyrics/chord sheet, and he wrote his arrangement before he had ever heard the melody. Starting with laughter and a joke punch-line drum fill, this unique rendition epitomizes what we hope to accomplish with ROOTS AND SPROUTS: share new approaches to old songs while having fun. Check out Ryan's site at ryanandrewfox-----AMAZING GRACE----Dan Danner's unique feel for this classic formed from an on-the-spot arrangement that surprised even him. Ask him about it sometime; it's a great story! Dan (vocal, guitar, keyboard), is joined by Don Skelton on his stand-up basses (one bowed, the other plucked), Jenny Dolkas Southerland (cello), and Sarah Osborne (violin). As this song evolved, I was stunned. Could this really be possible in my humble garage studio? Rhetorical question of course, but the answer comes anyway: Yes, with stellar musicians, this is possible. Special thanks to Steve Dolkas for suggesting his daughters add their strings. Too, I am extremely thankful for Dan Danner's constant help with this first album's production.----THE WATER IS WIDE----Patti Langen's accelerated version of this usually hauntingly slow classic will take many by surprise. With Drew Ferris' banjo, Rich Langen and Patti's guitars (and my drums), the song covers a lot of water in three minutes. Paddle faster! I love Patti and her voice!----SHENANDOAH---- Jody Calcara's version has already affected so many early listeners. Jody's emotive vocal and constant, pulsating guitar and bass, with Patti Langen's equally strong harmony and Kurt Fuhrmeister's sweet mandolin, combine to make this a favorite. From the San Francisco area and fresh from mixing at his Grammy-winning friend Mark Needham's (Chris Isaac, The Killers, Shakira, Imagine Dragons) in Hollywood, Jody spent many hours here working with me and my system to mix "Shenandoah." He helped in so many ways; I am grateful for Jody's patience and his involvement!----WADE IN THE WATER---- Dave and Patty Barrett's powerful performance was pure fun to witness and record. Their offering is a great example of how musicians who constantly perform live together master the recording environment. Dana Marver, promoter/producer/arranger/rock memorabilia expert (owner of OTRVINYL) and all-around musician, added bass (one-take!) and keyboard to supplement Dave's initial guitar track. Bill Mendenhall added lead guitar on the outro. I took Dana's suggestion to add a lot of drum "fills" when my turn came. Thanks all!----PARAGON RAG----Recorded live in a local recording studio in the late 1990's by the Dolkas sisters (Jenny Dolkas Southerland, Sarah Osborne, and Bridget Dolkas) this Scott Joplin rag exemplifies the syncopated "ragged" rhythm popular in the early 1900's. Grateful for this fine, fun contribution.----FRANKIE AND JOHNNY----Rich Langen breathed new life into his version track by track, avoiding the song's stereotypical shuffle rhythm. Rich does it all: vocal, guitars, bass, and even plays his self-made Cajon (box) drum. Masterful!----THE CUCKOO---- Jay Weseloh played guitars, ukelele, bass, and layered vocals to create this unique version. His fun vocals (complete with "warbling") and clean guitar and uke leads are sure to satisfy. (Search "J. Weseloh III" on iTunes, CD Baby, Amazon, and most download sites).----FOLLOW THE DRINKING GOURD----Dave Langen's vocal and guitar work bring this folk standard alive. His strong vocal immediacy affirms this ageless, freedom message. Livi Langen's harmonies enhance Dave's sharing of Everyman's arduous journey. Keep on trekking!----BLOW THE CANDLE OUT----Gary Langen (vocal, guitar), multi-instrumentalist and one of my primary recording accomplices, chose his haunting tune for sentimental reasons. "Blow the Candle Out," a traditional Irish folk song, was the first song he performed at a huge Hootenanny (look it up, young people) in the early 1960's. I added tympani, 1700's "thank God for reverb" snare drum, and imitation fife keyboard. (Experience Gary's WAVENERGY and SETTING SUN, RISING MOON on CD Baby, iTunes, Amazon, and most digital sites.)----TILL WE MEET AGAIN----Drew Ferris (Vocal, Guitar) performs this number one hit from 1919 with the help of Patti Langen (Harmony), Gary Langen (accordion-like keyboard), Fred Vencill (Acoustic Bass), and me (Drum Set). Drew has garnered the most advanced attention for ROOTS AND SPROUTS, Album #1. Drew is another of my primary recording mates.----HANGMAN----Master storyteller and troubadour, Peter McBride (Vocal, Guitar) shares this centuries-old folk song of true love in crisis. Peter often performs for Young Audiences of San Diego. Catch Peter live for a great show!
(Multi-faceted, Peter is also the Education writer for Examiner.com).----OLD STEWBALL----Claude Rhead (Vocal) , singer, guitarist, and songwriter, chose "Old Stewball" for the love of the song and its inherent allegorical message. We thank Patti Langen (Harmony and Guitar) and Dan Danner (Guitar and Bass). For me, this is what ROOTS AND SPROUTS is all about: Musicians choosing and playing/singing songs they really enjoy.----LITTLE MAGGIE----I recorded Gil Taitano's and Joe Upczak's (1950-2006) rendition of the bluegrass standard back in the early 1980's. For me, this is pure fun: five-string banjo and guitar, extemporaneously performed, each musician taking turns and not fretting (pun intended) over the details too much.
