Album Notes
Hi There, My name is Ruark Downey. Nice to meet you!

I moved to New York City in the fall of 2003 after earning my BFA in
acting from the University of Connecticut. I still remain active in theater,
both as an actor and a composer working with various theaters in and
around NYC (, .
After a few months of living in New York, auditioning and living off
some savings, I was struck with the realization that there was a tiny
chance I wasn’t going to be instantly famous and I would actually
need to get a “real” job. Sooo, I persevered and I did the struggling
actor thing for a few years (waiting tables, catering, retail, etc)
and I was landing acting and music gigs here and there.
But, I wasn’t booking anything that would allow me to live off being a full
time performer. I was beginning to come to another realization.
The realization that I would never be happy struggling to make
it as a working actor and musician unless I had something else that
I loved doing … some other creative outlet … some other passion.

It was in 2005 that a good friend of mine who was working for
Gymboree Play and Music said to me, “Dude, you should come try this!
It’s a blast and I think you’d be really good at it!” That was the beginning.
I started with Gymboree in the spring of 2005, teaching gym, art,
and movement classes. I worked there for a few years,
selling out my classes and helping them promote pilot programs,
before I made a switch and went over to teach with Kidville, NYC.
At Kidville I also taught gym, art and music. After a few months,
it was one of my managers there that said to me,
“Hey, you should try teaching the Little Maestro’s program!
It’s a blast and I think you’d be really good at it!” So I auditioned
to teach and perform with the critically acclaimed Little Maestro’s program.
They told me I would be perfect and brought me on board!
It was at that point that I was starting to become hooked…
making music with children was becoming a real passion.

I went on to teach with Little Maestro’s for a few years before I decided
I needed another change. Their programs were great,
but they weren’t totally me. I had developed a real sense of what
I wanted to bring to a music class. I wanted to incorporate all
the fun and excitement and energy of a rock band style class with
the intimate and personal feel of a one on one mommy and me
sing-along style class. I also wanted the creative freedom to
not only write and perform the songs that I chose, but most importantly,
the freedom to take the ideas of the children and grownups in
my classes and write the types of songs that THEY chose.
That’s when another good friend of mine said to me,
“Ruark, you should just start your own company!
You’ll have a blast and I think you’ll be really good at it!”
Not too long after that, Roots With Ruark was born!
In the interim I’ve worked (and in some cases continue to work)
with other children’s programs around the city including
The Songs of Love Foundation, Shadowbox Theater,
Striking Viking Story Pirates (Everyone Gets a Song),
La Palestra Kids, the YMCA, and Baby Moves, NYC.

Now enough about me…grab an album so you and your family can have the best time!
We’ll plant a song and watch it grow :)
