ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
These songs tell stories of adventure and human emotions, power and magic. I read them first as poems, then discovered they had tunes. Some of the old ballads go back to the medieval period in England and Scotland, when robber barons inhabited the border country between England and Scotland. The stories are told very economically; many of them are tragic, but there are stories with happy endings too.
I've sung them for many years, but last year (2012) I got together with two fine musicians from Calgary and we put together two CDs. One, "Sheath and Knife", with similar material, is already on sale on CD Baby. Now there is this companion volume, "Serpent's Knee". Some songs on the CDs are sung unaccompanied. On others there are exciting pipe instrumentals, haunting flute melodies, and the music of mandolin and hurdy-gurdy.
