ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
After a long pause from recording, Ross Daly presents us with his new, self-released album, entitled “The other side” (August 2014). Featuring some of his closest collaborators of the past 10 years, the album is comprised of nine original compositions influenced by a large range of musical traditions from Turkish classical and folk to Cretan, North Indian, Persian, Azeri and Balkan.
Ross Daly and his colleagues have for decades immersed themselves in the rigorous disciplines of various modal traditions acquiring knowledge and experience, which they then creatively distill into a new sound of exceptional beauty which could equally have its origins in the distant past, the distant future or anywhere in between. The ethereal and mesmerizing interaction of the two bowed instruments (Tarhu and Lyra) of Ross Daly and Kelly Thoma together with the intricate although often explosive laouto of Cretan virtuoso Giorgos Manolakis take the listener on a magical journey through new, uncharted, but at the same time strangely familiar terrain.

Master musicians Zohar Fresco on the percussion, Pedram Khavar Zamini and Araz Salek from Iran, on tombak and tar, Miles Jay on the bass, Efren Lopez on the medieval hurdy-gurdy, Christos Barbas on the Turkish ney and Nikolas Palaiologos on ud and cura saz contribute
significantly to the unfolding of Daly’s original compositions.
With his characteristically enchanting sound, the artist seeks to bring us closer to our “other side”, that unknown (and perhaps unknowable) side of ourselves to which we all aspire to connect.
As he puts it in the liner notes of the cd:
The other side...
"Where does music come from?" He answered, "doesn't
everybody have an other side to themselves which they don't really know? Music comes from there....."
The other side...
Everything has a form, everything has a meaning. On the other
side, everything has nothing and nothing is everything...
The other side...
Music, a thousand year journey in a single lifespan...
